Applications
ESCON-A/Ferro-Shield systems are designed for various applications including industrial and municipal steam transmission, geothermal collection and distribution, district heating, cogeneration, process fluid transport, transportation of fuel and heavy oil, and solar collection and distribution.
System FeaturesThe ESCON-A/Ferro-Shield system is a DDT (Drainable, Dryable, and Testable) air gap
piping system, ideal for conveying fluids and gases below grade at temperatures above 250°F. Key features include a urethane elastomer coating for corrosion resistance, optional electric or steam heat trace, and a cathodic protection system. The system also includes dryable insulation and fully insulated
pipe supports to maintain thermal efficiency and allow for leak detection.
Specifications
The system includes customer choice service pipe insulation, stainless steel bands for insulation placement, and a smooth wall welded steel conduit casing. The conduit coating is a urethane elastomer applied to a thickness of 30 mils, ensuring durability and protection. Pipe supports are designed to allow airflow and drainage, with insulation that thermally and electrically isolates the service pipe.
Installation and Testing
Installation requires handling according to manufacturer directions, with air testing of the casing at 15 psig and hydrostatic testing of the service piping at 150 psig. The entire conduit system must pass a 5,000-volt holiday test. Backfill involves a 4-inch layer of sand or fine gravel, with even backfilling using suitable excavated soil.
General Guidelines
All underground lines must be drainable and dryable, with factory prefabricated sections to minimize field welds. The system design must conform to ANSI B31.1 standards, with factory-trained technical assistance provided during critical installation periods.
Service Pipe and Sub-Assemblies
Internal pipes are standard weight carbon steel, with butt-welded joints for larger sizes and socket welded for smaller sizes. Sub-assemblies like end seals and anchors are designed to prevent moisture ingress and allow complete draining and drying.
Conduit Coating and Pipe Supports
The conduit system is coated with urethane elastomer, ensuring it passes a 5,000-volt holiday test. Pipe supports are spaced at 10-foot intervals, designed to maintain airflow and drainage while supporting the service pipe.
