QAQC of Specialty Fats on Palm Oil Application Note

Product catalog summary
Introduction
The document discusses the challenges faced by the palm oil industry in refining crude palm oil (CPO) into refined, bleached, and deodorized palm oil (RBDPO) for specialty fat production. The industry incurs significant costs for chemicals used in quality control, which also lead to high waste treatment expenses. Key quality control parameters include Free Fatty Acid (FFA), Iodine Value (IV), moisture and impurities (MI), Peroxide Value (PV), and slip melting point (SMP). PerkinElmer has developed a rapid FT-IR method using the Frontier™ FT-IR Infrared Spectrometer System to address these issues.

Experimental
The document details the use of the PerkinElmer Frontier FT-IR system for quality control of specialty fats. Oil blends are injected into a BaF2 window liquid cell at 65°C, with a spectral resolution of 8 cm-1 and 32 scans. The system covers a range from 4000 to 400 cm-1. Calibration models for FFA, IV, MI, PV, and SMP are developed using PerkinElmer Spectrum Quant Advance Chemometric software.

Methods
- Moisture (MI): Determined by the loss in mass on heating below 130°C.
- Peroxide Value (PV): Measures substances that oxidize potassium iodide, expressed in terms of active oxygen.
- Iodine Value (IV): Indicates unsaturated fatty acids, expressed as mg of iodine absorbed per 100g of sample.
- Free Fatty Acid (FFA): Amount of potassium hydroxide needed to neutralize fatty acids in 1g of sample.
- Slip Melting Point (SMP): Temperature at which fat melts and slips up a capillary tube under controlled conditions.

Results
The calibration process involves scanning samples in a heated liquid cell, providing rapid determination of parameters. The FT-IR spectrum in the Mid-IR region offers precise quantitative predictions due to strong IR peak absorption.

Features of the PerkinElmer Frontier FT-IR System
- Preset calibrations with minimal on-site fine-tuning.
- Heatable liquid cell for transmission measurement.
- Preheater to reduce sample preparation time.
- Absolute Virtual Instrument (AVI) technology for improved calibration transfer and accurate wavelength calibrations.

Conclusion
The PerkinElmer Frontier FT-IR system provides a rapid alternative to traditional wet chemistry methods for palm oil-based products. It offers simultaneous analysis of multiple parameters, making it ideal for high-throughput environments in the palm oil industry.

QAQC of Specialty Fats on Palm Oil Application Note-1

Authors: Kenneth Way Chiang Poh PerkinElmer, Inc. Petaling Jaya, Malaysia Technique for Quality Control of Specialty Fats Using the PerkinElmer Frontier FT-MIR/NIR System Precise FT-IR Spectroscopy Introduction In the process of refining crude palm oil (CPO) into refined, bleached and deodorized palm oil (RBDPO) for specialty fat production, the palm oil industry spends millions of Euros for chemicals needed in its quality control efforts of RBDPO. Due to its high chemical usage, the CPO industry faces enormous waste treatment costs. The quality control parameters in the manufacturing of specialty fats, such as Free Fatty acid (FFA), Iodine Value (IV), moisture and impurities (MI), Peroxide Value (PV), and slip melting point (SMP), not only consume many chemicals, they also harbor the potential to cause environmental issues if left untreated. To help reduce those issues, PerkinElmer has developed a rapid FT-IR method using its Frontier™ FT-IR Infrared Spectrometer System. What follows is a report on how the Frontier FT-IR can provide an effective, environmental friendly solution that will save the palm oil industry both time and money. i> Perkin Elme ’ For the Better

The calibration involves scanning the sample in heated liquid cell and is a fast method to determine minute amounts of above mentioned parameters in specialty fats (Figure 2). The FT-IR spectrum in Mid-IR region ensures better and more precise quantitative predictions compared to conventional Near-IR measurements due to strong IR peak absorption in Mid-IR region.
