Product catalog summary
Overview of Parr 2811 Pellet Press
The Parr 2811 Pellet Press is a compact, hand-operated device designed for compressing powdered materials into pellets or tablets. It is particularly useful in laboratories for bomb calorimetry and other test procedures, offering a cost-effective alternative to expensive machinery. The press is portable, requiring minimal bench space and no fixed mounting, and it ensures contamination-free pellet production.
Applications in Bomb Calorimetry
Pelletizing is crucial in bomb calorimetry, especially for finely powdered samples. Pellet form offers advantages such as restricted burning rates, complete combustion, and ease of handling. Some materials, like benzoic acid, require pelletization for safe and effective combustion.
Other Test Procedures
The press is also valuable in pharmaceutical, biological, nutrition, and spectrographic laboratories. It aids in preparing samples for emission spectrometry by ensuring precise positioning in sparking electrodes.
Pellet Sizes and Adjustments
The press can produce cylindrical pellets with flat ends in six different sizes, ranging from 3 mm to 1/2 inch in diameter. The compressive force is adjustable, allowing for the production of pellets with varying thickness and density. The anvil's height can be modified to accommodate different material volumes and desired pellet thickness.
Construction and Maintenance
The press is constructed from durable materials like T-303 stainless steel and Nitronic 60, with replaceable parts for longevity. Punches are heat-treated for strength and polished for smooth operation. The design facilitates easy cleaning and maintenance.
Pellet Making Process
The process involves four steps: filling the die, compressing the charge, reversing the die holder, and ejecting the pellet. Adjustments can be made to ensure optimal compression and pellet ejection.
Specifications and Ordering Information
The press features a 7-inch lever arm, a maximum punch stroke of 1.25 inches, and a base dimension of 5 x 9 inches. It weighs 17 lbs, with a shipping weight of 20 lbs. Various models and extra punch and die sets are available, with specific sizes and configurations detailed in the ordering guide.

using the maximum force of the press. When compressing light or fluffy materials the die can be raised after successive punch strokes to compensate for the reduction in the volume of the charge. The variable anvil setting can also be used as a means for adjusting the amount of pressure applied to a pellet. If duplicate pellets of equal density are desired, these can be made by using equal amounts of sample and leaving the anvil at a fixed setting while taking the punch through its full stroke when forming each pellet.
