The masking of the sound proposed by Oyster, is equivalent to the diffusion of light. Imagine a dark ro n where a candle is first lit and then turned off. The light will be easily detected in the dark.

Now let's imagine that in the room the lights have been turned on. The candle is still lit, but its light radiation is no longer evident because it has been "masked" by the other lights.
