Introduction

The OSA 3700 Passive Hydrogen Maser is designed for modern time and frequency applications requiring high stability and accuracy, such as metrology and deep space missions. It serves as a primary frequency reference with an accuracy better than 1E-12 and high frequency stability, making it a viable alternative to cesium or active hydrogen maser clocks.

Principle of Operation

The maser operates by locking a quartz oscillator to the frequency line of hydrogen atom emission. Frequency fluctuations are minimized by adjusting the RF-cavity frequency to match the quartz oscillator. The system uses FM excitation signals for spectral line indication and frequency adjustment, controlled by an FLL processor. In case of power failure, internal batteries provide a 10-minute backup.

Typical Characteristics
  • Frequency accuracy: ±5x10-13 within a temperature range of +5°C to +40°C.
  • Frequency stability varies from 7x10-13 at 1 second to 2x10-14 at 3600 seconds.
  • Magnetic sensitivity is less than 2x10-14 per Oersted.
  • Long-term frequency drift is less than 5x10-14 per month during the first 18 months.
  • Temperature coefficient is less than 5x10-14 per °C.

OSA 3700 Passive Hydrogen Maser Passive Hydrogen Maser Frequency Standard Principle of operation Hydrogen Maser principle of operation is based on quartz oscillator frequency locked to the frequency line of hydrogen atom influence of emission the of the discriminator discriminator. RF-cavity The frequency fluctuation on emission line is eliminated by RF-cavity frequency adjustment to quartz oscillator frequency. As discriminator energy level emitted by hydrogen atoms is less than the sum of loss energy, FM excitation signal is introduced into the discriminator cavity to provide spectral line...
