Product catalog summary
Introduction
OmniSeal® is a high-performance sealing brand known for its durability, chemical resistance, and ability to function under extreme temperatures. Developed by Fluorocarbon and now part of Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics, OmniSeal designs are recognized across various industries.
Company Background
Saint-Gobain, founded in 1665, is a leader in engineered materials, including high-performance seals, with a history of innovation and excellence.
Applications
OmniSeal seals are utilized in industries such as aerospace, transportation, construction, medical instrumentation, and semiconductor manufacturing, valued for their versatility and performance.
Technology and Manufacturing
Manufactured globally to ISO 9100 standards, OmniSeal seals are made with precision using PTFE and other polymers, capable of withstanding temperatures from cryogenic to +300°C.
Seal Components and Functionality
OmniSeal seals feature a PTFE jacket and a corrosion-resistant metal spring energizer, ensuring effective sealing at various pressures by compensating for wear and misalignment.
Types of Seals
  • Static Seals: For applications with no relative motion between the seal and hardware.
  • Dynamic Seals: For applications with relative motion, such as hydraulic cylinders.
Seal Design and Selection
OmniSeal offers designs like 103A, 400A, APS, and RP II, each suited for specific applications based on pressure, temperature, and motion type.
Installation and Friction
Careful installation is required, especially in closed grooves. Friction is influenced by material, lubrication, and surface finishes, with charts available for friction calculation.
Specifications and Design Considerations
SGPPL manufactures springs with various load capacities, with special springs available upon request. Total load calculations consider pressure load and average spring load. For rotary applications, linear friction and frictional torque are calculated using total load, diameter, and material coefficient of friction.
Friction and Rotary Motion
OmniSeal seals are designed for high-speed and high-pressure rotary applications, with material coefficients of friction varying based on material composition.
Temperature, Pressure, and Extrusion Gap
Seal materials harden at cold temperatures and soften at high temperatures. Minimizing the extrusion gap prevents seal failure, with back-up rings bridging the gap.
Hardware, Finish & Hardness
The surface finish affects wear, with smoother surfaces recommended for static applications and specific finishes for dynamic applications. Sealing surface hardness should be 60 to 70 Rockwell C for moderate to high-speed applications.
Seal Design Variations
OmniSeal offers various spring designs and configurations for different sealing environments and requirements.
Seal Jacket Materials
SGPPL provides a range of seal jacket materials, including Virgin PTFE, Modified PTFE, and Polymer Filled PTFE, each with specific properties for different applications.
Spring Energiser Materials
Metallic springs and elastomeric energisers are compatible with most fluids, with specific media compatibility advised through Technical Support.
OmniSeal Product Overview
The document details OmniSeal products like 103A, 400A, APS, and RP II, each designed for specific applications, including static and dynamic sealing in aerospace, military, and industrial sectors.
Materials and Options
Materials include various stainless steels, Inconel 718, Elgiloy, and Hastelloy C276, with optional elastomeric O-Ring energisers and RTV silicone filling for specific applications.
OmniSeal 103A
Suitable for static applications, offering high spring load for excellent sealing on various surfaces, available in different gland sizes.
OmniSeal 400A
Designed for dynamic applications with a cantilevered finger spring design, providing reduced friction and consistent sealing at various pressures.
OmniSeal APS
Features a coiled wire spring design for light load and wide deflection range, suitable for small cross-section and diameter applications.
OmniSeal RP II
Utilizes a wrapped and formed ribbon spring for high deflection and average load conditions, suitable for static and dynamic applications.
Face Seals

The OmniSeal is a spring actuated, pressure assisted sealing device con- sisting of a PTFE (or other polymer) jacket, partially encapsulating a corro-sion resistant metal spring energiser. When the OmniSeal is seated inthe gland, the spring is under compression, forcing the jacket lips against the gland walls thereby creating a leak-tight seal. The spring provides permanentresilience to the seal jacket and compensates for material wear and hardware misalignment or eccentrici- ty. System pressure also assists in energizing the seal jacket. Spring loading, assisted by system pressure provides effective...

Radial Sealsin Static Service > While most of the OmniSeal designscan be used as static radial seals, the OmniSeal 103A, Page 16, is generally recommended for this service. Its moderate to high spring load provides positive sealing under most static sealing conditions. Radial Sealsin Reciprocating Motion > Reciprocating radial seals are themost common OmniSeal applica- tions. For rod and piston sealing and similar applications, the OmniSeal400A, Page 18, is recommended for general purpose sealing at low tomoderate pressures. This series has alow load, high deflection spring which provides low...

RACO 1100A is also an excellent choice when maximum sealability is mandatory in liquids and gases with a low specific gravity and sealing atcryogenic temperatures. The OmniSeal 103A, face seal is generally the first choice for most static face seal applications. This series utilizes a moderate to high load spring, and is capable of sealing effectively over a wide temperature and pressure range.Because of its very high springloading, the OmniSeal RACO OmniSeal 400A, is recommended forrotary face seal applications at slow to moderate rotary speeds. Low spring loading keeps friction to a minimum....
