TFS Series

Product catalog summary
Specifications:
The TFS Series resistors are designed with a thick film resistive element and screen printed glass encapsulation. They offer resistance values ranging from 100Ω to 100KΩ, with a temperature coefficient of 100ppm/°C and tolerances of 1%, 2%, 5%, and 10%. The operating temperature range is -55°C to +200°C. These resistors are tested under VDE 0750 standards with a pulse duration of 10 milliseconds.
Features:
The TFS Series is surge capable and non-inductive, making it suitable for medical surge protection applications. It is ideal for replacing standard carbon composition resistors and can be customized in dimensions, values, tolerances, and characteristics.
Energy and Power Ratings:
The series includes models TFSA to TFSF, with energy ratings from 6J to 55J and power ratings from 0.5W to 2W. The energy ratings are based on a 10ms pulse, and for shorter pulses, the energy rating must be derated according to the maximum individual pulse rating chart.
Applications:
These resistors are used in power supply conversion, electron microscopes, X-ray systems, high-resolution CRT displays, and geophysical instruments.
Design Considerations:
For applications involving transients, pulses, or surges, it is crucial not to exceed the normal rated operating voltage. The energy ratio should be calculated and compared against the pulse chart to ensure it falls below the maximum pulse energy curve. If not, a larger model should be selected.
Example Calculation:
An example is provided where a 1µF capacitor charged to 3.5kV uses model TFSC, 1KOhm. The energy ratio calculated was 55%, which exceeded the energy curve limit, indicating the need for a larger model, such as TFSD, which has an energy ratio of 18%.
Ordering Information:
Standard part numbers are provided for various resistance values and tolerances, with energy ratings and power specifications for each model.

TFS Series-1

thick film Axial surge high energy TFS Series Surge Capable Thick Film Non Inductive • Appropriate for medical surge protection applications • Ideal to replace standard carbon composition resistors • Custom dimensions, values, tolerances and characteristics available The TFS Series has been specifically developed to absorb large amounts of energy by efficient use of its compact mass. Ideal for medical surge protection applications, these thick film resistors offer non-inductive performance in an axial package. Uses include power supply conversion, electron microscopes, X-ray systems, high-resolution CRT displays, and geophysical instrument related products. Resistive Element Thick Film Encapsulation Screen Printed Glass • Momentary overload capability is 5 times rated power for 1 second or 2 times rated power for 5 seconds. Always verify designs with pulse and surge conditions through thorough testing of the design at maximum operating temperature and maximum pulse loading (or some margin above maximum pulse loading). Resistance Value 100Ω up to 100KΩ Temperature Coefficient 100ppm/°C Tolerance 1%, 2%, 5%, 10% • Damage to the resistor by excessive pulse loading is generally indicated by an increasing resistance of the resistor. • Energy ratings are based on single pulses (at least 1 minute between pulses). Test VDE 0750 (Pulse Duration 10 msec) • For multiple pulse applications the energy pulse rating should be reduced and the average power should not exceed the nominal power rating of the selected model. • See Single Pulse Energy section for more information 1-866-9-OHMITE • Int’l 1-847-258-0300 • Fax 1-847-574-7522 • www.ohmite.com • [email protected]
