Earthing systems

Product catalog summary
Overview: This document provides comprehensive guidelines and specifications for designing and implementing earthing systems as part of a lightning protection system, following DIN VDE 0185-3 (IEC 62305-3). It covers different types of earthing systems, materials, and installation procedures.
Earthing Systems Overview: The document highlights the importance of effective earthing systems for lightning protection, introducing equipotential bonding to prevent dangerous surges.
Types of Earthing Systems: Three main types are discussed: Deep Earther, Ring Earther, and Foundation Earther, each with specific installation guidelines and material requirements.
  • Deep Earther: Installed vertically, recommended length is 9.0 m, using galvanized or stainless steel rods and pipes. Corrosion protection is emphasized.
  • Ring Earther: Installed as a closed ring around a building's foundation at 0.5 m depth, using flat and round conductors made of galvanized steel, stainless steel, or copper.
  • Foundation Earther: Embedded in the concrete foundation, acting as a lightning protection earther, with stainless steel recommended for corrosive areas.
Materials and Specifications: Detailed specifications for conductors and earthing rods, including dimensions, materials, and corrosion protection measures. Product codes and packaging details are provided for ordering.
Installation Guidelines: Recommendations include connecting earthing systems to equipotential bonding, ensuring corrosion protection, and using appropriate connectors and holders.
Specifications: Detailed specifications for components like striking points, hammer inserts, interception rods, and more, with descriptions of type, dimensions, material, and use cases.
Procedures: Installation procedures for each component, emphasizing specific screws, nuts, and techniques, such as using hex-head screws for cross-connectors.
Standards and Norms: Many components conform to DIN standards, ensuring compatibility and reliability. Some exceptions are noted.
Recommendations: Always indicate the article number when ordering, use hardened components for durability, and ensure compatibility with existing systems.
Key Data from Tables: Tables provide critical data such as item numbers, packaging details, weight, and pricing per piece, essential for procurement and inventory management.
Critical Information: Ensure compatibility with existing systems, use hardened components, follow installation guidelines, and refer to the DEL notation for pricing and material references.
Component Descriptions:
  • End Piece: For attachment to steel structures, suitable for round and flat conductors, includes attaching holes.
  • Wedge Connector: Complies with DIN 48834, suitable for quick installation with high contact force.
  • Spacer: For professional laying of conductors, suitable for round and specialist conductors.
  • Expansion Piece: Used for expansion joints, includes hex-head screws, nuts, and washers.
  • Earthing Connection Block: For connecting different earthing systems, available with various attaching holes.
  • Conductor Holder: Available for round and flat conductors, with different mounting methods and materials.

A good earthing system in accordance with DIN VDE 0185-3 (IEC 62305-3) is the basis of a good lightning protection system. The lightning current safely deflected by the interception and arrester system is routed to the ground. The equipotential bonding performs an additional task between the arresters and as an equipotential bonding controller in passable areas. 224 TBS

Planning an earthing system The earthing system is part of the external lightning protection system, which routes the lightning current into the ground where it is to be distributed. The key criteria for an even lightning current distribution without dangerous surges occurring are form and dimensions. In accordance with DIN VDE 0185 Part 3 (IEC 60305-3) Section 4.4.1, a lower earthing resistance < 10 ⍀ is generally recommended. An earthing system can be constructed from one of the three arrangements described below. It is possible to connect different earthing arrangements, although the risk...

Ring earthers (surface earthers) Outside the building, at least 80% of the ring earther´s overall length must be in contact with the ground. It must be installed as a closed ring at a distance of 1.0 m and a depth of 0.5 m around the external foundation of the building. A ring earther is an earther according to arrangement type B.
