Product catalog summary
Introduction to Spring Engaged Brakes
Nexen emphasizes the importance of regular inspection and sensor integration for safety in braking and holding applications. The document highlights potential risks and the need for redundant systems, particularly in vertical applications where load falls could pose a danger to personnel.
Profile Guide Rail Brakes
The RB series provides holding and emergency stop capabilities in power-off situations by clamping onto the center of profile guide rails. They offer high holding force and low backlash, making them suitable for precise position holding. The RBR variant is a cost-effective solution with a unique design for force application.
Rod Locks
Nexen's RL rod locks deliver significant holding force on NFPA and ISO cylinders, ensuring long life and precise positioning. They feature low backlash, fast engagement, and optional manual release, and are compact and maintenance-free, suitable for dynamic emergency stops.
Servomotor Brakes
These brakes are designed for servomotors up to 20 horsepower, offering high torque and durability with true zero backlash. They can withstand repeated emergency stops and are maintenance-free, providing reliable position holding and power-off stopping.
Ball Screw Brakes
These brakes prevent back-driving and load drops in vertical applications, offering true zero backlash and high torsional rigidity. They are maintenance-free and reliable for holding loads during motor or reducer failures.
Flange-Mounted Brakes
Nexen offers several flange-mounted brake designs for NEMA and IEC flanged motors, providing fast response, low inertia, and suitability for emergency stops and power-off holding applications.
Shaft-Mounted Brakes
These self-contained brakes are easy to install, providing high dynamic torque and long friction facing life, ideal for emergency stopping and power-off holding applications.
Caliper Brakes
Caliper brakes are suitable for high stopping or holding torque requirements, allowing for custom systems with standard components, and can be used in linear applications.
Conclusion
Nexen's spring-engaged brakes offer a wide range of options for various applications, providing high performance, energy efficiency, and low maintenance solutions. The document emphasizes safety measures and the benefits of Nexen's technology in improving productivity and reducing costs.
Product Overview
Nexen offers a range of spring-engaged, air-released calipers and discs suitable for various applications. The product line includes five models available in twelve sizes, providing high static torque ranging from 700 to 50,000 in-lbs (79 to 5,650 Nm) with Nexen rotors, and potentially higher with larger customer-supplied rotors. Multiple calipers can be used on a single rotor to increase torque.
Specifications
Nexen rotors support bore sizes from 0.5 to 6.5 inches (12.7 to 165.1 mm) and can achieve speeds up to 4,500 RPM. The calipers are available in post and foot mount versions, with some models offering manual release and nickel plating. Hydraulic release versions are also available.
Innovative Features
The VC500 caliper brake addresses the issue of holding force loss due to spring decompression by compensating for facing wear, eliminating the need for facing gap adjustments and maintaining consistent braking power.
Applications
Nexen's products are suitable for emergency stops, power-off stopping/holding, and both rotary and linear applications. The flange-mounted clutch-brakes and spring-engaged tooth clutches offer high torque holding in compact designs, with speeds up to 3,700 RPM and various mounting options.
Energy Efficiency and Maintenance
These products consume very low energy while released, unlike electric brakes, and are designed to be maintenance-free.
Certifications and Availability
Nexen is ISO 9001 certified and offers products with IP54 rated wash-down protection. The company has sales offices in the United States, Europe, Japan, and Australia.

IMPORTANT NOTICE! Nexen recommends regular inspection of the spring-engaged brake’s holding force and suggests the installation of a sensor integrated into the control system to detect engagement and disengagement. Nexen expects spring-engaged products to be used correctly and is not responsible for injuries, damages, and operational malfunctions if: • The product’s “User Manual” instructions are ignored or neglected • The brakes are used inappropriately • The brakes are modified • The brakes are handled, operated, or maintained incorrectly • A proper service factor was not used • Spring engaged...

INTRODUCTION TO SPRING ENGAGED BRAKES Nexen continues to work closely with major manufacturing organizations that want to reduce the risk of harm to people, equipment, or the environment, that may arise from the operation of a section of production equipment. An intelligent risk-reduction strategy protects personnel, machines, and the environment, increases productivity, improves efficiency and increases uptime. The result of these partnerships is a growing range of spring-engaged, air released brakes and linear clamping elements. Studies in Europe and Japan show that most robot accidents do...

PROFILE GUIDE RAIL BRAKES Nexen’s RB (rail brake) series offers holding and E-stop capability in power-off situations. Rail brakes clamp onto the center of profile guide rails to provide positive braking and holding in all axes without touching the bearing surface of the rail. High holding force and very low backlash make it ideal for accurate position holding where drive train backlash or lack of rigidity could allow excessive movement. • Available for profile guide rail sizes: 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 45 Spring-engaged, air-released Static holding force from up to 585 lbs [2,600 N] Fast engagement:...

ROD LOCKS Nexen RL rod locks provide incredible holding force on NFPA and ISO cylinders, and precision rods in a small package. Their internal clamping collar spreads the clamping load over a large area on the rod ensuring it doesn’t damage it and gives a long life. Very low backlash and no rod displacement when engaging/disengaging allows accurate positioning. Optional manual release allows rod movement without air pressure and engagement/disengagement sensor provides lock mode feedback in critical applications. • Static holding force from 180 - 8560 lbs [890 - 38,077 N] Holding forces exceed...

SERVOMOTOR BRAKES Nexen’s servo motor brake is designed to mount to the shaft end of servomotors up to 20 horsepower. The brakes input and output features can be the same or different allowing it to act as an adapter between dissimilar mounting features. The input end bore accepts the motor shaft and is fixed inside the brake with a split-hub-shaft collar arrangement. With higher torque, and durability, than other braking options and true zero backlash and high rididity so drive system accuracy is not effected. • Seven sizes to fit servomotors up to 20 horsepower Models available for NEMA 23,...

BALL SCREW BRAKES Nexen’s Ball Screw Brakes provide reliable holding in a compact package, overcoming a common problem found in vertical ball screw applications. During a power loss the motor has no holding torque allowing the ball screw to back drive and the load to drop. Even when a brake-motor is used the brake tends to be weak and doesn’t withstand many E-stops before failing. Ball Screw brakes connect to the machined end of a ball screw to prevent back driving, load drops, and equipment damage even if the motor or reducer fails. Five models with torque up to 1100 in-lbs [125 Nm] True zero...
