PRINCIPALS OF OPERATION

Product catalog summary
Principles of Operation: The document describes the operation of a piston system that utilizes compression springs and ball bearings. The system includes a split collar and piston mechanism where the piston moves up a ramp on the collar under spring force, causing the collar to constrict on the rod.
Compression Springs: These springs provide the actuating force necessary for the rod lock mechanism.
Ball Bearings: They are used to separate the split, tapered collar and piston, facilitating smooth operation.
Breather Vent and Air Inlet: Air pressure applied to the opposite side of the piston compresses the springs, releasing the grip on the rod.
Manual Release: Some models feature a manual release mechanism that allows disengagement of the rod lock without air pressure. This is operated by a cam and wrench, with a "default-to-lock" function, meaning the rod lock engages automatically when no force is applied.

PRINCIPALS OF OPERATION-1

BREATHER VENT COMPRESSION SPRINGS PISTON BALL BEARINGS SPLIT COLLAR MANUAL RELEASE CAM A series of equally spaced compression springs provide the rod lock actuating force. Dozens of ball bearings separate a split, tapered collar and piston. The piston travels up the ramp on the collar under spring force and causes the split collar to constrict on the rod. Air pressure applied to the opposite side of the piston compress the springs to release the grip on the rod. Select models have a manual release feature to disengage the rod lock without air pressure. The mechanism is cam operated, turned with a wrench and is a “default-to-lock” function. As long as a force is applied to the wrench the rod lock is disengaged. With no force applied the rod lock “defaults” to the engaged position.
