TOPBALL Slide Products

Product catalog summary
Introduction and Features
The document introduces TOPBALL Slide Bush Products, highlighting their self-aligning capabilities, increased load capacity, and extended travel life compared to conventional bushings. Key features include floating load plates, greater ball contact, and unibody construction for quieter operation. These products are available in both inch and Euro metric standard sizes.
Rated Life and Load Ratings
The rated life of the bushings is determined by load ratio, shaft hardness, and load conditions. Equations for calculating life expectancy are provided, emphasizing the importance of considering peripheral factors like shaft and housing design.
Shaft and Housing Requirements
High precision shafts and housings are essential for optimal performance. Recommended tolerances for shaft diameter and housing bore are outlined to ensure proper clearance and fit, crucial for preventing early failure and ensuring smooth operation.
Ordering Information
Details on ordering various types of TOPBALL Slide Bush and Slide Units are provided, including specifications for different models like TW, TW-OP, and anti-corrosive types.
Basic Load Ratings
The document explains the basic dynamic and static load ratings, stressing the importance of not exceeding these ratings to prevent permanent deformation and ensure smooth movement.
Recommendations and Best Practices
Recommendations include ensuring proper shaft hardness, considering load coefficients, and selecting appropriate sizes based on expected life and operating conditions. Examples of calculations for life expectancy and load handling capabilities are provided.
Figures and Charts
Figures illustrate the circular arch design, floating seal, and self-aligning features. Charts provide data on life expectancy, hardness factors, and load coefficients, aiding in the selection and application of the products.
Specifications
The document outlines manufacturing tolerances for the TOPBALL shaft, including a surface finish of 16 micro-inch rms or less, hardness between HRC 60 to 64, and a case-hardened depth of at least 0.04 inches. Correct shaft diameter tolerance is detailed in Table 3 on Page 8.
Housing
Various designs and manufacturing techniques are available for mounted housings, with pre-engineered slide units also offered. Proper fit guidelines are provided in Table 3 on Page 8.
Mounting
The TOPBALL is designed for slip fitting, and extreme force should be avoided during bushing insertion to prevent damage. Figures 3 to 6 illustrate proper assembly methods.
Part Number Symbols
The document explains the part number symbols for ordering TOPBALL components, detailing series, measurement type, inscribed circle diameter, seal symbols, and modifications.
Load Ratings and Dimensions
Tables 4 and 5 provide standard and open type dimensions and load ratings, including nominal shaft diameter, working diameter, and load capacities. Detailed dimensions and load ratings for block type, double-wide block type, adjustable type, and double-wide adjustable type slide units are included.
Ordering Information
For ordering assistance, a contact number is provided, and additional ordering information can be found on pages 26-27.
Specifications
NB slide shafts are made from materials such as AISI 52100, 1060, and 440C, chosen for their hardenability, fatigue strength, wear resistance, and toughness. The shafts are case hardened using high-frequency induction hardening techniques, achieving surface hardness of 60-64 Rc for carbon steel and 52-56 Rc for stainless steel. Surface roughness is maintained at 10-16 micro inches RMS, and straightness is kept within 0.001˝-0.002˝ per foot.
Diameter and Length Tolerances
NB recommends ISO g6 tolerance for standard high-grade linear motion bearings and h5 tolerance for precision-grade bearings. Shafts are available in standard lengths or can be cut to special lengths with specific tolerances.
Ordering Information
Part numbers include series, nominal shaft diameter, tolerance, overall length, and shaft modifications. For example, an anti-corrosive slide shaft with a 2” diameter, ISO g6, and 72” length is ordered as SFWS32x72.
Features
NB shafts are case hardened and ground to improve bearing life, offering better surface hardness, depth of hardness, surface roughness, cylindricity, and straightness. They are available in corrosion-resistant stainless steel and pre-drilled for open bushings.
Product Applications
Shafts are used for guideways, and deflection constraints must be maintained to ensure the proper functioning and service life of the linear bearing assembly. Calculations for shaft deflection and angle are provided for various loading conditions.
Custom Machining
NB offers custom machined shafts, such as spindles and guide rods, with various modifications like chamfers, reduced diameters, external threads, and tapped holes. All requests must be accompanied by a drawing.
Shaft Support and Rail Assemblies
NB provides precision machined aluminum die-cast support blocks for end shaft support and aluminum extrusion shaft support rails, available with or without pre-drilled mounting holes. Complete shaft-rail assemblies are also available.
Specifications and Ordering Information
  • General Specifications: The document provides specifications for shaft rail assemblies, including nominal shaft diameters, outer assembly dimensions, and maximum lengths. The standard maximum length is 144 inches, with longer lengths available upon request.
  • Ordering Instructions: To order, specify the part code, diameter code, width symbol, seal code, length, and any shaft modifications. Examples are provided for clarity.
  • Part Number Symbols: Detailed explanations of part number symbols for various components such as TOPBALL slide units, slide shafts, shaft support rails, and end shaft supports are included. Each symbol corresponds to specific measurements and modifications.
Key Tables and Figures:
  • Table 19: Lists dimensions and mounting details for shaft rail assemblies, including weight per foot and base mounting holes.
  • Figures 22 and 23: Illustrate side views and shaft rail assemblies.

The life of a slide bush can be easily calculated with the load rating of the bush, shaft hardness and applicable load. However, in many cases, slide bushing failure may be caused by improper design of bush peripherals, including the shaft and housing, inappropriate mounting or improper operation. Serious consideration of these peripheral factors, in addition to load rating, are highly recommended when designing a slide bush application. Basic Dynamic Load Rating and Life Expectancy L The basic dynamic load rating is Lh = 2 which· allows a rating life · Ls N1· 60 the load of 2-million inches...

Produc t s Load Coefficient (fw) When calculating the bush load, it is necessary to accurately obtain weight, inertial force based on speed, moment load and each transition as time passes. However, it is difficult to calculate those values accurately because reciprocating motion involves the repetition of starts and stops as well as vibration and impact. A more practical approach is to obtain the load coefficient by taking the actual operating conditions into account. Operation at low speed (600 in./min. or less) without impulsive shock from outside Operation at intermediate speed (2400 in./min....

Basic Static Load Rating If a slide bush is loaded when it is in a stationary condition or working at low speed, a permanent elastic deformation is formed on the rolling element. The deformation prevents smooth movement of the bushing. To eliminate this possibility, the basic static load rating must not be exceeded. Relation Between Ball Circuits and Load Rating The load rating of a slide bush varies according to the loaded position on the circumference. The value in the dimensional table indicates the lowest load rating with the load placed on top of one ball circuit. If the slide bush is used...

Produc t s Shaft and Housing To optimize NB TOPBALL performance, high precision shafts and housings are required. 1. Shaft: Dimensional tolerance, surface finish and hardness greatly affect the traveling performance of the TOPBALL. The shaft must be manufactured to the following tolerances. A. A surface finish of 16 micro-inch rms or less. B. Hardness of HRC 60 to 64. Hardness less than HRC 60 decreases the life considerably and reduces the permissible load. Hardness over HRC 64 accelerates steel ball wear. C. Case-hardened depth should be a minimum of .04 inches. D. The correct tolerance of...
