CAPACITANCE PROBES - Special Push-Pull

Product catalog summary
Overview: This document provides detailed information on capacitance sensors designed for ungrounded or poorly grounded targets. It highlights the unique push/pull technology developed by MTII, which integrates two high-precision sensors into one body, suitable for various applications such as semiconductor thickness measurement, sheet metal thickness, and automotive brake rotor run-out.
Capacitance Technology: Traditional capacitive sensors require the target to be electrically grounded, which can lead to inaccuracies if the target's electrical conductivity or ground path changes. The push-pull design by MTII addresses this by using two capacitance sensors with a 180-degree phase shift, allowing current to travel across the target surface, thus eliminating inaccuracies from poorly grounded targets. This technology also enables measurement of highly resistive targets.
Push/Pull Technology: The push/pull amplifier design cancels common mode electrical noise, which is beneficial in environments with magnetic bearing surfaces, semiconductor wafers, and air bearing floating surfaces. The document details the types of push/pull probes and their specifications, emphasizing the importance of grounding the probe's shell to the amplifier for optimal performance.
Specifications: The document includes detailed specifications for various probe models, including dimensions, range, sensitivity, and resolution. It also provides information on compatible MTI capacitance amplifiers and optional accessories like low noise extension cables and calibration fixtures.
Calibration and Fixturing: The KD-CH-IIID calibrator is highlighted as a precision fixture for securing non-contact displacement sensors and varying target positions for calibration. The FS-2 fixture stand is described as an adjustable support system for positioning probes over targets.
Conclusion: MTII's push/pull capacitance sensors offer a robust solution for measuring ungrounded or poorly grounded targets, with applications across various industries. The document provides comprehensive technical specifications and accessory options to support these advanced measurement solutions.

Capacitance Technology: Standard capacitive sensors require the target to be electrically grounded. Current flows from the probe face to the target and back to the amplifier to complete the circuit. The capacitance between probe and target is proportional to the distance and converted to a 0 - 10V output from the amplifier. The measurement of electrically grounded targets can be, however, affected by changes in the electrical conductivity or ground path of the target.
