Motor Protection Filters

Product catalog summary
Protect Your Motor From Long VFD Output Circuits
This document provides guidance on protecting motor insulation systems from stress due to high voltage peaks and dv/dt when using a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) at a long distance from the motor.
Selection and Use of the MTE Motor Protection Filter (LC Sine Wave Type)
  • Ensure compatibility by verifying the following conditions: VFD switching frequency between 5kHz and 20kHz, VFD output frequency of 60Hz or less, ambient temperature of 40°C or less, altitude of 1,000 meters or less, and supply voltage of 480V (up to 600HP) or 600V (up to 20HP).
  • Select the appropriate MTE Motor Protection Filter based on motor HP/voltage rating. Proper connection is crucial to avoid damage, with capacitor connections on the 'motor side' of the reactor.
Selection
  • Filter model selection is based on the motor's HP and Full Load Amp (FLA) rating. The filter's fundamental current rating should closely match the motor FLA.
  • Ensure the motor load impedance is compatible with the filter's current rating to prevent misapplication and potential damage.
Location
  • The output filter acts as a heat source and should be installed away from combustible surfaces.
  • Avoid installing near workstations or living areas due to potential high-frequency audible noise.
  • Typically, the filter is installed near the VFD for convenience and optimal protection of output circuit wiring and VFD output semiconductors.

Motor Protection Filters-1

MTE Corporation Application Note, July 2000, Doc# AN0104, pg 1 of 2 Guard your motors insulation system against stress caused by high voltage peaks and dv/dt often experienced with use of a VFD at long distance from the motor. Selection and Use of the MTE Motor Protection Filter (LC Sine Wave Type) Verify that the sine wave filter is compatible with your application : ҕ VFD switching (carrier) frequency set in range of 5kHz to 20kHz? VFD output frequency 60Hz or less? Օ Ambient temperature 40C or less? Please note that improper connection can cause damage to the components of filter or drive. Capacitor connections must be on the Гmotor side of the reactor. ԕ Altitude 1,000 meters or less? 480V (up to 600HP) or 600V (up to 20HP) supply? If you can answer yes to the questions above, apply the appropriate standard MTE Motor Protection Filter. Select based on motor HP/voltage rating. The connection is shown below. >

Motor Protection Filters-2

MTE Corporation Application Note, July 2000, Doc# AN010 4 , pg 2 of 2 Selection : The filter model selection is based on the HP and Full Load Amp rating from the motors nameplate. The Motor Protection FilterҒs fundamental current rating must be as close as possible to the motor FLA. The first three digits of the filters catalog number indicate its fundamental current rating. Care should be taken in selection, as significant oversizing or undersizing of the filter may cause damage to the filter components. The Motor Protection Filter design requires that the impedance of the motor load be within...
