Starrbide Crucible Brochure

Product catalog summary
Description: STARRBIDE is a high-quality, tar-bonded silicon carbide crucible known for its reliable performance in non-ferrous melting and holding applications. It is suitable for aluminum and higher temperature alloys like brass and bronzes.
Applications: Designed for consistent performance with aluminum and higher temperature alloys, with variants available for specific applications.
Typical Metal Casting Temperature: 1300ºF—2200ºF (700ºC—1200ºC).
Performance Characteristics: Offers good thermal shock resistance, resistance to chemical treatment agents, and high mechanical strength.
Identification: These crucibles are colored black.
Pattern Range: Available in a wide range of shapes and sizes, including custom sizes upon request. Heavy wall options and various pouring lips are available.
Quality: Manufactured to ISO9001:2000 quality standards.
Preheating/First Use: Crucibles should be preheated empty to a bright-red color (1472ºF/800ºC) to remove moisture and set the glaze for maximum oxidation resistance. Preheating time varies with size.
Charging: Once hot, charge and melt immediately. Light returns should be charged first to cushion heavier metal. Use tongs for ingots, placing large pieces vertically.
Product Line: Includes EXCEL, HIMELT, EXCEL E, INDUX, SALAMANDER SUPER, SYNCARB, and ULTRAMELT, each with specific material compositions and forming processes.
Specifications and Dimensions: Provides dimensions and capacities for various crucible shapes, including BUC and CYLINDER shapes, in both imperial and metric units.
Crucible Care and Handling: Store in a dry, warm area and avoid stacking or rolling. Check for cracks or transport damage before use. Use a ceramic fiber blanket to seal and allow space between the top and sides of the furnace. Daily cleaning while hot is recommended.
Installing the Crucible: A base block made of the same material as the crucible ensures uniform heating and reduces thermal strains. The base block should align the crucible base with the burner's center line.
Bale Out Furnaces: Maintain a 1/8” gap between the crucible's top edge and the cover to allow for expansion. Use insulating material between the cover and the crucible's top edge.
Safety: Proper safety clothing must be worn at all times, following AFS standards. Ensure no moisture is introduced into the melt.
Tilting Furnaces: The base block should be cemented centrally and level on the furnace floor. Grip bricks should be positioned 3” below the crucible's top edge, with a 1/4” space between the crucible wall and grip bricks.

INSTALLING THE CRUCIBLE TILTING FURNACES > The use of a base block made of the same material will ensureuniform heating of the crucible base and help reduce thermal strains. The base block should have the same or slightly larger diameteras the base of the crucible to provide adequate support. For optimum heat transfer and melting efficiency, the height ofthe base block should be such that the base of the crucibles is level with the center line of the burner. The base block and crucible should be installed centrally in the furnace. Cement the base block on the floor of the furnace; make sure it...
