Optimize Production of Milk Protein Concentrate (MPC65 to MPC85) - 1

APPLICATION NOTE OPTIMIZE PRODUCTION OF MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATE (MPC65 TO MPC85) In-line analysis of milk protein concentrates for control of total solids and protein levels Introduction Cream used in the production of butter and other higher fat product is separated from raw milk. Skim milk is the resulting product, which is very low in fat (<0.05%) and high in protein and lactose. This skim milk is concentrated to produce milk protein concentrate (MPC). Subsequently protein is concentrated to a certain ratio to total solids in various levels/products i.e., MPC65 = milk protein concentrate containing 65% protein on dry basis (PDB). Several varieties of MPC are produced i.e., MPC70 (70% protein on dry basis), MPC80…etc. These products are then dried and sold/distributed as a powder. They are used in various food and dairy drink products to fortify the protein. ProSpect real time in-line analysis The production manager is responsible for the overall production and sets procedures for the operators to control the process ensuring the products are within specification. The desire is to optimize the levels of constituents in the product to avoid rework or giving away product. Challenge Typically, samples are collected and taken to a central or satellite lab for analysis. This can take some time, especially during the solids building phase resulting longer start-up time and possible off-specification product being produced for longer than desired. While waiting for results, production may be stopped/put in recirculation or continued and risking making off-spec product.

MILK PROTEIN CONCENTRATES PROFIT IMPROVEMENTS APPLICATION NOTE ProSpect In-line Process NIR for measurement of protein and total solids in milk protein concentrates. Feedback data for process control. Simultaneous output of results for all constituents. Results for other constituents such as lactose and fat can also be output. The ProSpect In-line NIR offers real time in-line analysis of the MPC for Total Solids and Protein provides immediate control the process. MPC65, MPC80 ANALYSIS STATISTICS Range Total Solids This rapid continuous analysis of the process makes for better, closer to...
