UCS100X Family Sell Sheet - 1

UCS100X Family Programmable USB Port Power Controllers with Charging Emulation Highlights Summary USB ports are now considered charging sources, but many portable devices have unique charger requirements that result in sub-standard to no charging at all. Microchip’s UCS1001 and UCS1002 are USB port power controllers with charging emulation. When a portable device is plugged in, the UCS100X devices will auto-cycle through up to nine pre-loaded charger emulation profiles until charging commences. The embedded profiles are compatible with BC1.2 CDP, DCP, YD/T-1591 as well as most Apple® and RIM® portable devices, e-book readers and many tablets. The UCS1001/1002 provide a single USB port power switch capable of up to 2.5A of continuous current as well as integrating a USB 2.0 compliant data switch. The UCS1002 adds communication over the I2C™/SMBus that allows users to create custom charger emulation profiles and customized current limiting for the USB charging port. This charging port can be updated later to accommodate portable device signatures that don’t yet exist, virtually future-proofing a system. The UCS1002 also allows current measurement, charge rationing and dynamic power allocation of the USB port. ■ Nine pre-loaded charger emulation proles compatible with BC1.2 CDP, DCP, YD/T-1591 as well as most Apple and IM portable devices, e-book readers and many tablets ■ For systems with limited or no host supervision, UCS1001 offers auto-cycling through charger proles ■ Dedicated output pin for Attach Detection (UCS1001-2, UCS1002) or Charging Active (UCS1001-1) ■ Programmable charging emulation prole for future or custom charging emulation updates (UCS1002) ■ Current measurement and charge rationing of the power being provided from the USB port (UCS1002) ■ Split voltage source for VCC and Vs allows Low Power Attach functionality when system is in sleep, standby or off state ■ Allows portable device charging when an application or host is in standby or in a sleep state; designer can now treat battery as a captive power source ■ 20-pin QFN, 4 × 4 mm, RoHS-compliant package Desktop and mobile PCs Tablets & E-book readers Docking stations Wall chargers Printers Monitors Set-top boxes Digital TVs Nine built-in charging emulation proles Creates a charging port with wide device compatibility. Does not require host intervention; useful in wall chargers and system in sleep states Integrated 2.5A Vbus power switch Can support the high power requirements of tablets and provide the spin-up current needed for HDD Split voltage source for VDD and VS Low power attach detection that does not depend on the main power rail. Attach detection when the system is in standby, sleep state or off System signal to denote and device has been inserted. Discrete signal to turn on main power supply Current measurement and charge rationing on the USB port Power can be measured and dynamically allocated to where it is needed in a system. Supply power from a portable system that is off and/or in standby. The UCS1002 can automatically turn off power to the USB port before a battery is drained. Advanced Fault Handling Low test prevents damage to the end device (versus solutions that retry connection with full current limit value)
