They are ideal for remote adjustment of sensitive, hard-to-reach optical components which can be influenced by the compressive and torsional forces imposed by traditional manual adjustment micrometers. Typical applications include optimizing the alignment of a laser cavity, zeroing in on coherence lengths or just adjusting the pointing of a beam over a long distance. Vacuum compatible versions to 10-6 hPa are available. Applications can also be automated using LabView or other software by sending basic commands to the NSC200 NewStep controller through the integrated RS485 port. NewStep actuators feature reliable open-loop stepper motors that provide 11mm travel, sub-micron minimum incremental motion and can be used for loads up to 28 N. Furthermore, the actuator incorporates a novel mechanism that virtually eliminates backlash, which is critical in applications such as optimization of beam alignment or optical scanning. NewStep actuators can be also used for absolute and repeatable positioning taks and feature better than 2.2 ìm uni-directional repeatability. The NewStep actuator's compact design (only 60 mm long x 30mm diameter) and standard interface is designed to be compatible with many Newport mounts and manual stages. NewStep actuators can only be used with the NSC200 NewStep Controller (see page 853).
