Microscopy Tools Micromanipulators

Product catalog summary
Overview
The document provides detailed information on various micromanipulators offered by Newport Corporation, including motorized, hydraulic, and precision models. These tools are essential for applications in electrophysiology, patch clamping, intracellular recordings, and microinjection.

Motorized Micromanipulators (M3)
The M3 model is designed for precise positioning with submicron accuracy and remote actuation, enhancing stability by isolating hand movements. It is cost-effective due to the use of standard Newport components, allowing for easy assembly and reconfiguration. Key specifications include a 25 mm travel range, 0.1 µm minimum incremental motion, and a maximum speed of 0.3 mm/s. The M3 is available in left or right configurations and includes software for computer control.

Hydraulic Micromanipulators (MW and MW3)
The MW series is engineered for high precision and low drift, using a proprietary hydraulic mechanism with water as the medium. This reduces drift to less than 1 micron per hour. The MW is available in single-axis (MW) and three-axis (MW3) configurations, offering ultra-stable, compact design suitable for multiple stations.

Huxley Style Micromanipulator (MHX)
The MHX model is ideal for long-term intracellular recordings, featuring a 5-axis positioner for coarse adjustments and a vertical axis with 38 mm travel. It offers low drift, high resolution, and flexible adjustment capabilities, including a 360° base rotation.

5-Axis Precision Micromanipulator (M5)
The M5 model is designed for coarse positioning with smooth, precise motion. It features a rack-and-pinion drive, adjustable probe tilt, and a lockable vertical axis to prevent drift. The M5 is compatible with Newport's vibration-isolated workstations and is available with a magnetic base.

Accessories
Newport offers various accessories, including the MAC Probe Clamp, MAH Pipette/Injector Holder, and MAXYO Microscope Base, to enhance the functionality and versatility of their micromanipulators.

In addition to submicron positioning accuracy and exceptional smooth movement, motorized micromanipulators allow remote actuation, which isolates hand movement, thereby improving stability. Two of the most frequent complaints about motorized micromanipulators are their high cost and inflexible mechanical design. Using Newport’s standard products to build a motorized micromanipulator makes it possible for research scientists to overcome these obstacles. The M3 is based on standard Newport products that takes advantage of existing manufacturing processes and volumes, thereby allowing the M3 to be priced low compared to competitors. Since standard Newport products are designed to be assembled together, the components can be easily dis-assembled or reassembled to single or dual axis needs. The resulting motorized micromanipulator has the precision and functionality required to handle the most demanding applications in electrophysiology, patch clamp, intracellular recordings and microinjection. Specifications of the M3 • Travel Range: 25 mm • Minimum Incremental Motion: 0.1 ìm • Axis Resolution: 0.00757 ìm • Maximum Speed: 0.3 mm/s • Pipette angular adjustment: 0 to 90° increment • Swivel range: Up to 180° • Available in left or right configurations, M3L and M3R Benefits of the M3 • Dedicated ergonomic knob control for intuitive, fine or fast control of electrodes/probes/pipettes. • Knob adjustable pipette angle and quick release swivel enables easy and rapid replacement of pipette. • Compact and matched standard components use less space and are easily re-configurable. • Affordable, low cost standard Newport components. • Proven Newport quality that you can rely on. • Ultra low drift and low noise. Software & Drivers for Computer Control A software utility is included to drive each M3 axis via computer. The M3 can be automated using available LabView VI or the simple and intuitive M3 controller commands. The user can easily develop programs for specialized functions like cell wall penetration. Position memory is also available using the software commands. To match the height of any microscope, simply insert four steel P Series Posts below the M3.
