These attenuators are based on the principle of Fresnel reflection from four uncoated, counter-rotating UV fused silica wedged plates. How does it work? A collimated beam incident on a wedged optical plate experiences Fresnel reflection which varies with incident angle èô. A single wedged plate is unsatisfactory as an attenuator because the output beam deviation varies with angle and the dynamic attenuation range is small. However, with careful design, a symmetric arrangement of two pairs of counter-rotating wedges can be employed to produce an attenuator, with negligible output beam deviation and dynamic range proportional to the fourth power of the transmission of a single wedge. For small wedge angles an input beam polarized in the plane of incidence can experience near zero attenuation when èô equals the Brewster angle èâ. The attenuation for both polarizations increases as è approaches the critical angle for total internal reflection. • Up to 40 dB dynamic range • Broadband transmission • High damage threshold • Negligible beam deviation • Replaceable actuator on 3 and 5 mm aperture versions èô Specifications Wavelength Range 200 nm to 2.1 ìm Resettability 0.05 dB Reflected Beam Deviation 20 ìrad, average over range Beam Offset 50 ìm Insertion Loss 0.05 dB, horizontal polarization Power Dissipation 20 W, average Damage Threshold 3 J/cm2 pulsed at 1064 nm, typical U.S. Patent 4,398,806 Horizontal Polarization Vertical Polarization 25 20 15 10 5 0 0.00 0.10 0.20 0.30 0.40 0.50 0.60 0.70 0.80 0.90 1.00 Micrometer position (inches) Attenuation (dB) Attenuation vs. Micrometer Position for 935-5-OPT The graph shows the large dynamic range as a function of angle measured from the critical angle.
