Collimating Beam Probes for Fiber Bundles

Collimating Beam Probes for Fiber Bundles

Product catalog summary
Technical Reference Overview
This document provides technical specifications and usage guidelines for various light sources and accessories, including calibration sources, deuterium sources, arc sources, incandescent sources, monochromator and fiber illuminators, solar simulators, and photolithography instruments.

Collimating Beam Probes
The document details the use of collimating beam probes for Oriel fiber bundles. These probes are designed to collimate the diverging output from fiber bundles. The document specifies two types of probes: the Fused Silica Collimating Beam Probe and the Glass Collimating Beam Probe. The Fused Silica Probe (Model 77644) has a 19 mm effective focal length lens, while the Glass Probe (Model 77645) has an 11 mm effective focal length lens. Both are used to capture and collimate output cones from their respective fiber bundles.

Technical Note
The document includes a technical note explaining that a well-collimated beam cannot be produced from a large aperture fiber bundle. The smallest divergence angle for a perfect optical system is calculated using the formula: θ = Tan-1(d/f), where θ is the full angle divergence, d is the fiber bundle diameter, and f is the lens effective focal length.

Ordering Information
The document provides ordering information for different models of collimating beam probes, specifying the optic material and whether they include an integral shutter. Models include:
  • 77645: Glass, No Shutter
  • 77644: Fused Silica, No Shutter
  • 77653: Glass, With Shutter
  • 77652: Fused Silica, With Shutter

These probes are primarily used to collimate the diverging output from an Oriel Fiber Bundle. To collimate the output from our liquid light guides, use one of the probes described on page 262. Move the fiber bundle away from the lens to produce a focused image, far from the probe. To image at short distances use a focusing probe. The 77644 Probe has a fused silica, 19 mm effective focal length lens. It captures and collimates the output cone from fused silica bundles. The 77645 has a low F/# compound glass lens with an 11 mm effective focal length. It collimates the highly divergent output from glass bundles, and transmits over their useful spectral range. We also offer models with a shutter between the bundle and collimating lens, to cut off the beam and check the "radiometric zero." Tech Note You cannot produce a well collimated beam from a large aperture fiber bundle.
