New! Oriel Apex Sources with a Rear Reflector are now available. Potentially up to 60 % throughput improvement can be achieved as a portion of the backwards emitted radiation is captured to the output. Newport’s Apex Series of quartz tungsten halogen systems are "plug-and-play" sources of VIS-NIR radiation. These sources use an integrated housing - lamp, electronics and condensing optics in a single enclosure. The lamp is held in a pre-aligned mount, so there is no need for lamp adjustments. The power supply is pre-set to operate the specified lamp. You don't need to adjust the current or voltage. Simply install the lamp, turn the source on, and you're ready to begin working. These systems are ideal for Researchers or Systems Integrators who have fixed power applications (i.e. no need to adjust the lamp's power), and don't need the versatility of our modular systems. A computer designed fused silica aspheric lens collects the lamp's radiation and collimates it. The output is a highly collimated, 1.3-inch diameter (33 mm) beam. You can then re-focus the output with one of our focusing lens assemblies (described on page 237). If you are focusing into a fiber, use our Apex Fiber Illuminator (page 157). The Apex Fiber Illuminator has a focused output, matched to fused silica fibers. The output flange of the Apex housing is a 1.5-Inch Series female flange; all of our 1.5-Inch Series male-flanged accessories couple directly to the output of Apex. Safety Considerations Quartz tungsten halogen lamps emit some UV radiation. We recommend that users always wear protective eye and skin covering when working around any source that emits UV radiation. We offer protective glasses, goggles and gloves (see page 246).
