Product catalog summary
Introduction
Metso Ball Mills are designed for long life and minimal maintenance, offering a range of sizes from 5 ft. x 8 ft. with 75 HP to 30 ft. x 41 ft. with up to 30,000 HP. Larger models are available with dual pinion or ring motor drives, incorporating qualities that have made the Marcy name renowned since 1913.
Design Variations
Standard designs can be customized for specific applications, including grate discharge, peripheral discharge, dry grinding, special length to diameter ratios, high-temperature milling, or pebble milling.
Discharge Types
  • Grate or Diaphragm Discharge: Features a slotted grate with a discharge lifter assembly to convey material to the discharge trunnion opening, retaining balls and coarse material.
  • Trunnion Overflow Discharge: Has an open discharge end with a reverse helix in the discharge trunnion liner to retain balls.
Application and Feed Preparation
Ball mills grind ores and other materials to a typical product size of 35 mesh or finer. Feed preparation involves single or multistage crushing and screening, with normal feed sizes being 80% passing 1/4” for hard ores and 80% passing 1” for soft ores.
Testing and Grinding Circuit Design
Three types of tests are available for mill power determinations, including the Jar Mill grindability test and Bond Work Index determination. Metso engineers assist with circuit design, start-up, operation, and optimization, offering computer control systems for sophisticated circuits.
Operation
Ball mills can operate in open or closed circuits. Open circuit operation is suitable when another grinding stage follows, while closed circuit grinding is more efficient for size control of the final product. Common wet grinding flow sheets include open circuit, closed circuit with hydro cyclones, and closed circuit with vibrating screens.
Standards and Safety
All equipment adheres to applicable standards set by ASTM, NEMA, AGMA, AWS, and ANSI, with safety features included. Designs to meet other codes and local or state safety regulations are available upon request.
Conclusion
Metso's commitment to customer collaboration and adapting to changing needs has transformed it into a knowledge company, making a significant difference to its customers.
