Product catalog summary
Introduction
Metso Minerals Industries, Inc. has a long history of designing and manufacturing grinding mills, with over 8,000 units produced. The company offers a range of ball mills, including the Metso Overflow Ball Mill, which varies in size and power to suit different applications.
Specifications
Ball mills range from 5 ft. x 8 ft. with 75 HP to 26 ft. x 41 ft. with 20,000 HP. They are designed for durability and minimal maintenance. Variations include grate discharge, peripheral discharge, dry grinding, and more.
Applications
Ball mills grind ores and materials to a typical product size of 35 mesh or finer. They are used in various stages of crushing and grinding, with feed sizes varying based on ore hardness.
Types of Ball Mills
1. Grate or Diaphragm Discharge: Features a slotted grate for material discharge.
2. Trunnion Overflow Discharge: Has an open discharge end with a reverse helix to retain balls.
Testing and Design
Metso offers tests for mill power determinations, including the Jar Mill Grindability Test and Bond Work Index determination. Engineers assist with circuit design and optimization, ensuring productive grinding systems.
Operation
Ball mills can operate in open or closed circuits. Open circuits are suitable for non-critical size control, while closed circuits are more efficient for precise product size control. Common configurations include open circuit, closed circuit with hydro cyclones, and closed circuit with vibrating screens.
Standards and Safety
All equipment complies with ASTM, NEMA, AGMA, AWS, and ANSI standards. Additional safety designs can be provided upon request.

Product Presentation Testing of the Material Three types of tests are available for mill power determinations. In most cases one of two bench scale tests is adequate. First, a Jar Mill Grindability Test requires a 5 lb. (2 kg) sample and produces a direct measured specific energy (net Hp-hr/t) to grind from the design feed size to the required product size. The second test, a Bond Work Index determination, results in a specific energy value (net Hp-hr/t) from an empirical formula. If time permits and the user wishes, grinding circuits are set up and continuous tests are run to simulate plant...
