Safe Computer Solutions Failures of safety-critical electronic systems can result in loss of life, substantial fi nancial damage or can severely harm the environment. A safe computer allows direct control of safety-critical functions, meaning that the computer tolerates hardware faults and guarantees an undetected erroneous behavior of <1E-9/h. MEN provides safety at system level and even at board level. Safety is mainly achieved by built-in redundancy for critical function blocks like CPU, memory and internal FPGA structure. With triple redundancy the system remains functional even if one CPU or memory bank delivers a different result, thus providing reliability in addition to safety. Conductive Cooling Solutions The appropriate cooling method is essential for every application. Unlike forced air cooling, conduction cooling optimizes the thermal contact to conduct the heat from the source to the outer wall of the enclosure. This makes the enclosure itself a heat radiator. Suitable measures must be taken to minimize the thermal transfer resistance from the electronic component to be cooled to the enclosure wall. On the one hand, this is ensured by choosing the right materials. On the other hand, the boards inside the enclosure need to be placed in the right way, and the heat-conducting cooling blocks need to have such masses that optimum heat transport is guaranteed. The 3U CompactPCI® single-board computer supports rear I/O and by default comes with a specially designed CCA frame for conductive cooling.
