Flexible M-Modules for Industrial Markets - 1

special The Whole World of I/O Interfaces Embedded Solutions M-Modules™– Low Power, Cost-Effective and Flexible M-Modules™, ANSI-standardized since 1997, are a mezzanine standard perfectly suited for adding any kind of real-world I/O to the system in a flexible way. They are modular I/O extensions for all types of industrial embedded computers, from stand-alone devices to bus-based systems. Typical functionality comprises instrumentation, process I/O, motion, robotics, various general-purpose analog and binary I/O as well as common fieldbus interfaces and UARTs. A carrier board in 6U format can accommodate up to four M-Modules™, for instance in a CompactPCI® or VMEbus system. The parallel M-Module™ interface offers functions like 32-bit data bus, burst transfers up to 100 MB/s, DMA and trigger capabilities. An M-Module™ offers direct front-panel connection in addition to providing the I/O signals via the carrier card to a rear I/O adapter. This provides a clean path for sensitive signals without loss of data or signal quality – using, for example, shielded D-Sub connectors and COAX cables. Didn’t Find a Suitable Mezzanine? Create your own M-Module™! USM Universal Submodules make common mezzanine modules more flexible than ever. The USM development kit enables users to turn very specific I/O requirements or individual functional combinations into a fully configured product solution. These kits include a USM main M-Module, a USM submodule, a test board, cabling and an FPGA starter package. The “main” M-Module™ gets its specific function through the IP cores inside the FPGA – which can be changed at any time through implementation of different IP cores. The corresponding line drivers are realized on the submodule which is simply plugged on the respective main module. The Nios soft processor implemented in the FPGA provides local intelligence where needed. I/O signals are led to a 50-pin HP D-Sub at the front, alternatively to the board. The USM development kit is also a
