
The KPM163FQx is a digitally controlled insulation monitoring device designed for non-grounded (IT) AC mains systems with frequency converters. It is suitable for land, marine, and offshore installations and complies with IMCA D045 Code of Practice. The device monitors insulation resistance between the AC network and protective earth, providing real-time status via a meter and triple-zone LEDs indicating Alarm (red), Warning (yellow), and Healthy (green) conditions.
The unit injects a DC measuring signal into the monitored system; the insulation resistance is determined by the current flow through any insulation fault path. The measuring accuracy is unaffected by normal loads on the AC network. Monitoring starts after a default 10-second delay upon auxiliary power activation, with a minimum fault detection time of 9 seconds.
Trip levels and delay times are adjustable on the rear panel. When a fault exceeds the trip level and delay, a relay trips and a trip LED flashes. The timer resets if the fault clears during the countdown.
The device mounts in a DIN 96 panel cutout (92 x 92 mm). It can be connected directly to line voltages up to 690 V or via the CH163/1,4 high voltage adapter for voltages up to 1.4 kV. The adapter is a passive low-pass filter designed for 50, 60, or 400 Hz networks, potted in polyurethane with high inductance reactance modules to avoid DC saturation.
The unit includes a disable function for parallel IT networks, activated via a potential-free contact, which disconnects the measuring input and flashes the power LED every 2 seconds to indicate inactivity. A reset function is also available for latching alarms.
The device features an intelligent setting assistance mode activated by adjusting trip level potentiometers. In this mode, the analogue output and meter reading reflect the potmeter setting, facilitating calibration and verification.
Alarm and warning trip levels and delays are adjustable: warning delay 0-30 seconds, alarm delay 0.1-3 seconds, trip levels adjustable up to 1 MΩ.

The unit has three relays corresponding to alarm, warning, and fail-safe functions. The fail-safe relay energizes when the unit is powered. The alarm and warning relays can be latched or non-latched depending on the model (KPM163FQ or KPM163FQG).

When either the Warning or Alarm potmeter on the rear is operated by user, the meter goes into Assistance Mode and meter reading and analogue output will reflect the potmeter setting (the blue LED will be lit in this mode). How to set alarm levels: Firstly adjust potmeter fully clockwise (see that meter goes to the top), then adjust potmeter down to required Warning or Alarm setpoint. IDV MEASURING PRINCIPLE Insulation is measured between the complete galvanically interconnected AC network and its protective earth. The unit injects a DC measuring signal into the monitored system. The signal flows to ground via the path of the insulation fault, the level of flow indicates the insulation resistance. The measuring accuracy is not influenced by any normal kind of load attached to theAC network. This unit is used for any land, marine or offshore installations. Start of monitoring function is delayed when auxiliary power is switched on (default 10 secs delay). The unit has minimum of 9 seconds detection time for any insulation fault. Without any movement of potmeters, the meter will revert to normal Insulation Monitoring Mode after approximately 10 seconds. Trip levels and delays are settable on unit rear. A trip LED flashes when the trip level is passed, the relay trips when the delay has elapsed. The timer resets if the fault is removed during countdown. How to test analogue output signal: Adjust any trip level potmeter to activate Assistance Mode. Example: On a 4-20mA output, adjust potmeter fully anti clockwise for 4mAand fully clockwise for 20mA. MEGGER SAFE When auxiliary power is OFF the unit input is automatically protected against “megger” test voltages up to 1.4kVDC, and incorrect measurements caused by the unit’s input impedance are avoided. The KPM163FQx range is designed to comply with specification IMCA D 045 “Code of Practice for the Safe Use of Electricity Under Water” issued by IMCA. The unit meets EN 61010-1 Cat. III, Pollution degree 2 and the relevant environmental and EMC tests specified in EN 61326-2-4 to comply with the requirements of the major Classification Societies. OUTPUTS The KPM163FQx has an isolated analogue output proportional to meter reading. If output is used for remote meter reading, we recommend 0-1mAfor the slave indicator. SAFETY When a voltage adapter (CHx) is used the signal to terminals 4 and 6 on KPM163FQ is limited to a safe level, avoiding any dangerous voltage exposure to personnel.
