Industry: Automotive Supplier Application: Grinding Material(s): Carbon steel , water soluble coolant Product(s): VacuFilter® filtration systems Situation • FCC grinds carbon steel disks to achieve a highly precise finish for use in clutches. The grinders used were originally supplied with magnetic drum separators. Although the separators did filter the carbon steel material removed from the disks, it left the aluminum oxide that comes off the grinding wheel during the process. The build-up of this material in the coolant tank led to plugged coolant lines and increased coolant temperature, increasing costs and reducing finish quality. Mayfran Solution • VacuFilter paper vacuum filters with coolant chillers to replace the magnetic filters. Key Features • The VacuFilter system removes ferrous and nonferrous particles from coolant, giving a significant advantage over the magnetic filters which did not remove the oxides. Customer Benefits • Much longer coolant life with associated reduced costs, lower maintenance costs, and better control of their coolant temperature resulting in improved part finish. • Payback was accomplished within one year. Outcome • FCC has replaced all of their magnetic drum filters with Mayfran VacuFilter paper vacuum filters.
