Understanding low outgassing

Product catalog summary
Introduction
Low outgassing adhesives are increasingly important in high-tech industries sensitive to outgassed chemical compounds. These adhesives are formulated to meet stringent outgassing requirements, such as those specified by the ASTM E595-07 standard, which is crucial for applications in space systems and other sensitive environments.
Properties and Applications
Low outgassing adhesives are used in applications where optical or electro-optical components could be clouded by outgassed compounds. They are also critical in semiconductor manufacturing and commercial vacuum processes. These adhesives offer properties such as high lap shear strength, thermal conductivity, and resistance to various chemicals and temperatures.
ASTM E595 Standard
The ASTM E595 test measures the total mass loss (TML) and collected volatile condensable materials (CVCM) from materials in a vacuum environment. Materials pass if CVCM is less than 0.1% and TML is less than 1%, with allowances for water vapor regained. This test is the industry standard for evaluating outgassing performance, despite its limitations in predicting long-term behavior.
Adhesive Selection and Testing
Choosing the right adhesive involves considering whether low outgassing is necessary, as not all adhesives are tested for this property. Master Bond offers a range of ASTM E595-compliant adhesives, including UV-curable options, which have traditionally struggled to meet these standards.
Cure Schedules
For optimal low outgassing performance, a heat cure is recommended, as it improves crosslink density and reduces outgassing. A typical cure schedule involves room temperature curing followed by a heat cycle.
Popular Low Outgassing Adhesives
Master Bond provides various low outgassing adhesives, such as EP29LPSP, EP21TCHT-1, and Supreme 10HT, each with unique properties suitable for different applications, including cryogenic serviceability and thermal conductivity.
Conclusion
Low outgassing adhesives are essential for applications sensitive to chemical emissions. Master Bond offers a comprehensive range of products that meet ASTM E595 standards, ensuring reliability and performance in critical environments.

TECH SPOTLIGHT Understanding Low Outgassing Adhesives Applications that need to meet stringent outgassing requirements now have more adhesive options than ever. One of the most common issues addressed by our technical service department nowadays involves the outgassing characteristics of adhesives and related encapsulation and sealing compounds. And that’s understandable because a growing number of high-tech industries have discovered that their products and manufacturing processes can be sensitive to outgassed chemical compounds. As a result, there has been a dramatic upswing in the use of adhesives,...

Measuring Outgassing The industry standard test for measuring outgassing in adhesives and other materials is ASTM E595. Developed by NASA to screen low-outgassing materials for use in space, the test determines the volatile content of material samples placed in a heated vacuum chamber. Samples to be tested are first preconditioned at 50 percent relative humidity for 24 hours and weighed. They then go into the test chamber for another 24 hours with the temperature set at 125 C and the vacuum at a minimum of 5 x 10-5 torr. During that time in the test chamber, volatiles that outgas from the sample...
