Product catalog summary
Introduction to Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs)
Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) are known for their stability and accuracy in temperature sensing. They work on the principle that a change in temperature causes a change in the resistance of a wire. RTDs are precise and often used in various applications, typically encapsulated in probes for temperature measurement.
Advantages of RTDs
RTDs provide high accuracy, repeatability, and stability. Unlike thermocouples, they do not require cold junction compensation. Platinum is commonly used in RTDs due to its accuracy over a wide range and stability.
RTD Selection Criteria
Choosing RTDs depends on the application, response time, operating environment, and service length. Standard platinum RTDs have a resistance of 100 ohms at 0˚C and a temperature coefficient of 0.00385 ohm/ohm/degree C. Other materials like copper, nickel, and nickel-iron are also used.
Comparison with Thermocouples
RTDs have closer limits of error, are more sensitive to strain and vibration, and have a higher signal-to-noise ratio compared to thermocouples. They are linear over a wide range but are generally more expensive.
RTD Standards
International standards for RTDs include B.S. EN 60751, DIN 43760, IEC 751, ASTM 1137, and JIS C 1604. These standards differ in alpha values, affecting measurement accuracy if mismatched with instrumentation.
RTD Construction and Configurations
RTDs come with 2, 3, or 4 wire leads. Two-wire configurations do not compensate for lead resistance, while three and four-wire configurations do, with four-wire offering the highest accuracy.
Product Series Overview
  • Series 303: Superior stability, vibration resistance, and a standard resistance value of 100 ohms at 0˚C.
  • Series 404: Similar features with Teflon flexible lead wire and various termination styles.
  • Series 707: Industrial design with cast screw cover heads and various mounting fittings.
  • Series 808: Bare leads for custom termination and close interchangeability.
  • Series 909: Lightweight design with miniature screw coverhead and standard resistance value.
Conclusion
RTDs are crucial for precise temperature measurement in various industrial applications. Selection should be based on specific application requirements, and adherence to international standards is essential for accurate measurements.

Marsh Bellofram Thermo-Couple Products Division Resistance Temperature Detectors-1

Resistance Temperature Detectors have achieved a well deserved reputation in the industry for their superior stability and accuracy. The result makes these devices well suited for a wide variety of applications. A Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) senses heat based on the principle that a change in temperature results in a corresponding change in the resistance of a wire. The hotter the wires become, the larger or higher the value of their electrical resistance. RTDs are among the most precise temperature sensors available. The RTD can be comprised of many different termination styles as seen on the following pages. The RTD element is manufactured by winding a wire of plating a film on a ceramic or glass core. Usually RTDs are provided encapsulated in probes for temperature sensing and measurement with an external indicator, controller or transmitter, or enclosed inside other devices where they measure temperature as a part of the device's function, such as a temperature controller or precision thermostat. www.tcproducts.com a division of Marsh Bellofram www.marshbellofram.com 1-800-727-5646 85 Thermo-Couple Products Co. 85

The advantages of using RTDs are numerous. They offer high accuracy, repeatability, and stability. Another advantage is that cold junction compensation is unnecessary. Here is a brief summary of some of the advantages and disadvantages of both thermocouples and RTDs. RTD Selection Just as thermocouple selection is based on the intended application, RTDs are selected in the same manner. The response time and operating environment such as temperature and atmosphere are factors as well as the length of service. RTDs are available in a variety of combinations, the most commonly used material is platinum....

These specifications are not identical and readout instrumentation must be adjusted for the specific standard of the RTD used with that equipment. Differences in the alpha values of these standards can cause errors in measurement of an RTD if one standard is connected to the instrumentation of another standard. Organization Standard Alpha (Coefficient) Nominal Resistance (ohms) at 0°C...
