HD Series | Hysteresis Dynamometers

Product catalog summary
Overview: This document is a technical datasheet for Magtrol's HD Series Hysteresis Dynamometers, which are used for motor testing by absorbing load. The HD Series is one of three types offered by Magtrol, alongside Eddy-Current and Magnetic Powder dynamometers. The choice of dynamometer depends on specific testing requirements.
Features: The HD Series includes 16 standard models with maximum torque ranging from 2.5 oz·in to 500 lb·in. They feature a hysteresis braking system that provides precise torque loading independent of shaft speed, suitable for motor testing from no load to locked rotor. The dynamometers offer an accuracy of ±0.25% full scale and include an air flow sensor for overheating protection.
Description: Hysteresis Brake Dynamometers are ideal for low to medium power range testing, with a maximum of 14 kW intermittent duty. They do not require speed to create torque, allowing for a full motor ramp from free-run to locked rotor. Cooling methods vary by model, including convection, compressed air, or blower.
Applications: These dynamometers are used in various industries such as appliance, automotive, aviation, computer, HVAC, medical, and more, for testing small to medium-sized electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic motors, as well as internal combustion engines.
Dynamometer Selection: Selection is based on maximum torque, speed, and power requirements. The maximum power rating is crucial for heat dissipation and avoiding dynamometer failure.
Operating Principles: The hysteresis braking system provides frictionless torque loading independent of shaft speed, using a reticulated pole structure and a specialty steel rotor/shaft assembly.
M-TEST Software: Magtrol's M-TEST Software is used for motor testing, providing control over dynamometers and running test sequences. It supports data storage, display, and import into spreadsheets, and is ideal for engineering labs.
System Configurations: Magtrol offers open loop and closed loop test systems. Open loop systems are used for quick pass/fail testing, while closed loop systems collect data on a PC using M-TEST Software and additional hardware.
Specifications: The datasheet provides detailed specifications for various models, including torque range, drag torque, input inertia, power ratings, maximum speed, and cooling methods. Electrical power requirements are also specified for different models.
Dimensions: Dimensions for HD-100, 400, and 500 series with both long and short base plates are provided, with measurements in both English and Metric units.
Power Absorption Curves: The document includes graphs showing the maximum power (heat) dissipation capabilities of the dynamometers over time, with separate curves for standard and high-speed versions.
Customization and Options: Magtrol offers customization options for dynamometers, including mechanical modifications and encoder options for low-speed testing. The document also describes the availability of T-slot base plates for adjustable motor fixtures.
Ordering Information: The datasheet provides a model numbering system to specify configurations, including power supply voltage, base plate type, encoder type, and speed version.
System Options and Accessories: The document outlines additional system options such as the DSP 7000 High-Speed Programmable Dynamometer Controller and WB & PB Series Dynamometers, suitable for various testing applications.
Contact Information: Magtrol's contact details for offices in the USA and Switzerland are provided, along with a note on the availability of 3D STEP files on their website.
Additional Products: The document discusses various Magtrol products designed for power measurement and motor testing, including WB and PB dynamometers, MODEL 7500 Power Analyzers, AMF Series Motor Fixtures, and TAB Series Dynamometer Tables.

HD Series | Hysteresis Dynamometers-1

HYSTERESIS DYNAMOMETERS MAGTROL offers 3 types of dynamometer brakes to absorb load: Hysteresis (HD  Series), Eddy-Current (WB Series) and Magnetic Powder (PB Series). Each type of Dynamometer has advantages and limitations and choosing the correct one will depend largely on the type of testing to be performed. With over 50 standard models to choose from, Magtrol Sales professionals are readily available to assist in selecting the proper Dynamometer to meet your testing needs. FEATURES ▪ 16 Standard Models with Maximum Torque from 2.5 oz·in to 500 lb·in (18 mN·m to 56.5 N·m) ▪ 14 High Speed Models Available ▪ Hysteresis Braking System: provides precise torque loading independent of shaft speed ▪ Motor Testing: from no load to locked rotor ▪ Standard Torque Units SI (English & Metric available upon request) ▪ Accuracy: ± 0.25 % (full scale) ▪ Air Flow Sensor: For protection against overheating and operator error ▪ Base Plates: available in long or short versions ▪ Custom Dynamometers: for special torque and speed requirements Hysteresis Brake Dynamometers (HD Series) are versatile and ideal for testing in the low to medium power range (maximum 14  kW intermittent duty). With a Hysteresis Braking system, the Dynamometers do not require speed to create torque, and therefore can provide a full motor ramp from free-run to locked rotor. Brake cooling is provided by convection (no external source), by compressed air or by dedicated blower, depending on the model. All Magtrol Hysteresis Dynamometers have accuracy ratings of ± 0.25 % (full scale) depending on size and system configuration. Magtrol motor test systems can be found in test labs, at inspection stations, and on the manufacturing floors of most of the world’s leading manufacturers, users and certifiers of small to medium sized electric, pneumatic and hydraulic motors, as well as internal combustion engines. Magtrol supplies motor test systems for a wide array of industries including: Appliance, Automotive, Aviation, Computer, HVAC, Lawn and Garden, Medical and Dental, Electric Motor, Office Equipment and Power Tools. To better integrate dynamometers into systems, Magtrol offers both long and short base plates. The shorter base plate facilitates easier motor mounting when used with T-slot tables and Magtrol Adjustable Motor Fixtures, where as the long base plates are better suited for table top testing. © 2021 MAGTROL | Due to continual product development, Magtrol reserves the right to modify specifications wit

HD SERIES DYNAMOMETER SELECTION Magtrol’s Hysteresis Dynamometers cover a wide range of Torque, Speed and Mechanical Power ratings. To select the appropriate size Dynamometer for your motor testing needs, you will need to determine the Maximum Torque, Speed and Power applied to the Dynamometer. MAXIMUM TORQUE The Magtrol Hysteresis Absorption Dynamometer will develop braking torque at any speed point, including low speed and stall conditions ("0" rpm). It is important to consider all torque points that are to be tested, not only rated torque, but also locked rotor and breakdown torque. Dynamometer...

HD SERIES SYSTEM CONFIGURATIONS OPEN LOOP SYSTEMS Magtrol offers both open loop manual test systems and PCbased closed loop test systems. A typical open loop system will consist of a Dynamometer and a Magtrol DSP 7000 Dynamometer Controller in Open-Loop configuration. A Magtrol Single or Three-Phase Power Analyzer, which allows for the capturing of volts, amps, watts and power factor, can be included as an option. An open loop system is often used for quick pass  fail /  testing on the production line or at incoming inspection. Magtrol’s DSP  7000 Dynamometer Controller provides pass  fail testing...
