Product catalog summary
Overview of Bridle Level Measurement
A bridle, also known as a cage, isolating column, or bypass pipe, is a vertical pipe connected to a storage tank or process vessel. It allows for level measurement by mirroring the fluid level inside the tank. Magnetrol uses the term "bridle" to refer to a bypass chamber where level instrumentation is mounted.

Advantages of Bridle Level Measurement
  • Isolation: Instruments can be calibrated or maintained without disturbing the process.
  • Fewer Connections: Reduces the number of necessary connections, important for vessels requiring qualified welders.
  • Prudent Design: Eliminates the need for multiple instrumentation connections.
  • Saves Time: Ordering a bridle with instrumentation reduces installation time.
  • Avoids Obstructions: Prevents interference with tank components like mixers or ladders.
  • Reduces Turbulence and Foam: Calms the surface for more accurate measurements.

Bridle Anatomy and Instrumentation
Bridles are connected to tanks, with level equipment placed in attached cages. Common technologies include:
  • Guided Wave Radar (GWR): Fast configuration, unaffected by changing conditions.
  • Magnetic Level Indicators (MLIs): Provide local and remote level indication.
  • External Cage Float Switches: Suitable for various applications with different construction standards.
  • Displacer Controllers: Detect liquid level changes using buoyancy principles.
  • Ultrasonic Contact Point Sensors: Used for high or low-level alarms.
  • Thermal Dispersion Point Sensors: Offer high performance for level applications.
  • Capacitance Point Sensors: Provide alarm and control configurations.

Bridle Specifications
  • Materials: Options include carbon steel, stainless steel, Hastelloy, Monel, and special materials.
  • Quality Assurance: Adheres to ASME standards and other codes.
  • Accessories: Includes valves, insulation, and heat tracing.
  • Pressures: Up to 2500# ANSI.

Torque Tube Replacement
Torque tubes, though traditional, are bulky and complex. Eclipse Guided Wave Radar is recommended for replacing outdated torque tubes, offering easier installation and improved performance.

Tank Bridle Level Measurement-2

bridle (or cage, isolating column, bypass pipe, external chamber, etc.) is a vertical pipe connected to the side of a storage tank or process vessel typically with side/side or side/bottom connections. Because the fluid inside the bridle will rise and fall equally with the level of fluid inside the tank or vessel, the bridle has been adapted for level measurement on a broad scale. Magnetrol’s use of the term "bridle" refers to a bypass chamber on a larger process vessel on which the level instrumentation for that vessel is mounted. Bridles usually do not have level equipment extending into the...

Tank Bridle Level Measurement-3

Shown below are the most common level instrument technologies used for bridle measurement. Guided Wave Radar GWR mounted in a cage is well suited for bridle measurement. Configuration is fast, no calibration is required, and accuracy isn’t affected by changing densities, dielectrics, high temperatures or high pressures. Magnetrol’s Eclipse® and Horizon® transmitters are available with a wide range of probes, materials and options. Magnetic Level Indicators Developed for the most demanding industrial applications, MLIs provide local visual indication and remote indication when combined with a...

Tank Bridle Level Measurement-4

Frequently mounted in a bridle arrangement, torque tubes and torque tube displacer transmitters have maintained a strong foothold for many decades despite their shortcomings. They are bulky, mechanically complex, and their measurement accuracy can be degraded by density changes. Thick, abrasive or boiling liquids are also unsuitable. Eclipse Guided Wave Radar is the ideal choice for replacement of antiquated and troublesome torque tubes. Replacement is made easier when the new transmitter can reside in the same chamber vacated by the old technology. The first part of the replacement process is...
