VOLATILE ORGANIC COMPOUNDS “VOCS” REGULATIONS What are “VOCs”? VOCs stand for “Volatile Organic Compounds”. The term includes all sorts of common paint-related solvents as well as some industrial gases. These products readily evaporate then chemically react with car emissions and other pollutants to form smog. Why are VOCs important? Since The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, state environmental protection agencies, and many county and city level agencies have mandates to reduce smog, VOCs are targeted for reduction or elimination to the fullest degree possible. Some areas of the country are quite strict in their approach to minimizing the use of these materials, while others aren’t terribly concerned because their local air is fairly clean. As a result, regulations can vary from state to state and even county to county. Some of the strictest standards for VOCs are found in southern California, but increasingly, these same standards are being adopted by other states. These regulations not only include how much of certain types of materials can be used at industrial facilities, they also may include how a product can be sold. What does LPS® offer as a solution?
