Nitrogen Gas Permeability Testing in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP)-1

Labthink Instruments Co., Ltd. [email protected] +86-531-85068566 Atmosphere Packaging (MAP) Modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) utilizes inert gases like nitrogen to extend the shelf life of sensitive products like food and medicine. This report explores the limitations of traditional vacuum packaging and the advantages of MAP. It highlights the importance of accurate nitrogen gas permeability testing in MAP materials. Vacuum packaging, while reducing oxygen exposure, presents drawbacks. The nearvacuum environment causes package adhesion and product damage. The pressure differential facilitates unwanted gas ingress, requiring expensive high-barrier materials. Additionally, vacuum packaging is unsuitable for some fresh produce due to anaerobic bacteria growth. MAP replaces air with inert gases like nitrogen, offering several benefits. Reduced oxygen levels inhibit microbial growth and spoilage. Nitrogen maintains positive pressure, preventing product deformation and preserving package integrity. Two crucial tests are necessary for successful MAP implementation:   Material Barrier Property: This test evaluates the material's ability to retain nitrogen within the package, preventing quality issues from arising due to nitrogen loss. Nitrogen Gas Purity: Food-grade nitrogen with minimal impurities is essential for food safety. National standards typically specify allowable impurity levels.

Nitrogen Gas Permeability Testing in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP)-2

Labthink Instruments Co., Ltd. [email protected] +86-531-85068566 Estimating nitrogen permeability from oxygen permeability data is inaccurate due to material and temperature variations. Dedicated nitrogen permeability testing is necessary. The differential pressure method is the preferred technique due to limitations of the equal pressure method:   Inertness of Nitrogen: The low reactivity of nitrogen makes it difficult for the equal pressure method to measure its permeability. Carrier Gas Challenges: Using nitrogen as a carrier gas when testing nitrogen is impractical. Labthink VAC-V2 is...

Nitrogen Gas Permeability Testing in Modified Atmosphere Packaging (MAP)-3

Labthink Instruments Co., Ltd. [email protected] +86-531-85068566 The differential pressure method offers several advantages, for example, it follows a simple principle. A pressure difference is established to calculate the material's barrier property. It has a wide applicability. This method works with various gases and requires minimal gas consumption. In addition, this method can also determine nitrogen solubility and diffusion coefficients within the material. As MAP gains traction, accurate nitrogen gas permeability testing becomes increasingly important. The differential pressure method...
