Product catalog summary
Introduction
Integrating fluxmeters are used to control permanent magnet devices through sense coils. The Laboratorio Elettrofisico Helmholtz coils offer a fast, accurate, and cost-effective method for measuring and controlling the quality of permanent magnets.
Helmholtz Coil Design
The design consists of a pair of identical wound coaxial coils connected in series at a fixed distance equal to their radius, allowing samples to be placed in a large uniform central volume.
Key Benefits
  • Easy to use
  • Low cost
  • Precise and accurate
  • Meets international standards (IEC 60404-14)
  • Non-destructive testing method
  • Feedback control for calibration and magnetization systems
Measuring Principle
When connected to a fluxmeter, the Helmholtz coil provides an output flux proportional to the magnetic moment of the sample. This is described by the formula Φ = KH • Μ, where KH is the coil’s constant. The procedure follows the International Standard IEC 60404-14.
How to Measure
The measurement is based on the magnetic moment, which is the product of the sample's magnetic polarization and volume. For ferrites and rare earth magnets, the magnetic polarization is close to the magnetic remanence.
Choosing the Right Coil Size
The Helmholtz coils have a central volume with field uniformity, approximately an ellipsoid with a major axis of 0.93 R and a minor axis of 0.62 R. The magnet should fit within this volume for optimal accuracy.
Available Models
Various models are available with different diameters and measurement volumes, such as HM/R15, HM/R32, HM/R58, HM/R100, HM/R150, and HM/R250. Customized models are also available.
Company Information
Founded in 1959, Laboratorio Elettrofisico specializes in precise magnetizing and magnetic measuring equipment. The company is headquartered in Milan, with facilities in the USA, India, and China.

3-Axes Helmholtz Coil- control the quality of permanent magnets-1

HELMHOLTZ COIL - SINGLE AXIS LABORATORIO ELETTROFISICO The simple, economical solution that never goes out of style Integrating fluxmeters are often used to control permanent magnet devices by the use of sense coils. The Laboratorio Elettrofisico Helmholtz coils are an easy addition to any fluxmeter for a fast, accurate and low cost measuring technique to control the quality of permanent magnets. Our design consists of a pair of identical wound coaxial coils, connected in series at a fixed distance equal to their radius. This configuration permits the sample to be placed in a large uniformity central volume. • Meets international standards (IEC 60404-14) • Non-destructive method of testing • Feedback control for calibration and magnetization system MEASURING PRINCIPLE When connected to a fluxmeter, the Helmholtz coil provides an output flux Φ proportional to the magnetic moment Μ of the sample: Φ = KH • Μ, where KH is the coil’s constant (each coil is given with the proper certified constant). This measurement procedure is described in the International Standard IEC 60404-14. The magnetic moment is an essential magnetic property. For a permanent magnet sample, the magnetic moment Μ is the product of its magnetic polarisation Jd (in the working point) and its volume V; this gives directly the Helmholtz coil’s formula: For example: for ferrites and rare earth magnets, having essentially a linear J vs. H relationship in the second quadrant, the Jd is very clo

3-Axes Helmholtz Coil- control the quality of permanent magnets-2

When connected to a fluxmeter, the Helmholtz coil provides an output flux O proportional to the magnetic moment M of the sample: M=KH O where KH is the coil's constant (each coil is provided with its own certified constant). This measurement procedure is described in the International Standard IEC 60404-14. The large volume with field uniformity in the center of the Helmholtz coils is approximately an ellipsoid having a major axis of 0.93 R and a minor axis of 0.62 R. The magnet to be measured should fit within this volume to have the best reading accuracy (uniformity within 1%). The resulting...
