Pyrgeometers

Product catalog summary
Introduction
Pyrgeometers are instruments used for the precise measurement of far infrared radiation, specifically measuring incoming thermal radiation from the sky and clouds, and outgoing thermal radiation from the ground. They are widely used in meteorology, hydrology, and climate research due to their reliable all-weather performance and portability.

Specifications and Features
The CGR 3 and CGR 4 pyrgeometers are key models, with the CGR 3 being ideal for horticulture and agriculture due to its compact size and sealed construction. The CGR 4 is noted for its scientific accuracy and is used in top-level solar radiation monitoring networks. Both models feature silicon windows with internal coatings to block short-wave solar radiation, integrated bubble levels, and waterproof connectors.

Applications
Pyrgeometers are used globally in various environments, from the Antarctic to deserts, for accurate radiation energy balance measurements. They are designed for long operating life with minimal maintenance.

Choice of Pyrgeometer
The choice of pyrgeometer depends on the desired accuracy and performance. The CGR 4 is recommended for scientific use, offering a 180° field of view and reduced dome heating offset, eliminating the need for dome temperature measurements.

System Integration
Kipp & Zonen offers a range of compatible products and accessories to extend the capabilities of their pyrgeometers, including ventilation units, sun trackers, data loggers, and amplification systems.

Technical Specifications
The CGR 4 has a response time of less than 18 seconds, a field of view of 180°, and operates within a temperature range of -40°C to +80°C. It has a spectral range of 4.5 to 42 μm and a sensitivity of 5 to 15 µV/W/m². The CGR 3 has similar specifications but with a 150° field of view.

Conclusion
Kipp & Zonen pyrgeometers are essential tools for measuring far infrared radiation, offering high accuracy and reliability across various applications and environments.

Radiation from the sun is mainly in the ‘short-wave’ range from 300 to 4000 nm (4 µm) that includes the visible and ultraviolet. A proportion of this radiation is absorbed by clouds, aerosols and molecules in the atmosphere, which warms up and radiates ‘long-wave’ radiation. This is far infrared thermal energy (FIR) at wavelengths from 4.5 µm to beyond 40 µm. Both the shortwave and long-wave radiation reach the Earth, where some is reflected and the remainder warms up the surface. The Earth radiates long-wave thermal energy back to the sky. A pyrgeometer provides a voltage that is proportional...

CGR 4 is the best pyrgeometer currently available and is the choice for scientific use and in top level solar radiation monitoring networks such as the Baseline Surface Radiation Network (BSRN) of the World Meteorological Organisation. It is the partner for CMP 11, CMP 21 and CMP 22 pyranometers. CGR 4 has a specially designed silicon meniscus dome that provides a 180 ° field of view and has a hard-carbon coating on the outside to smooth the spectral response and provide extra surface protection. The detector is compensated for changes in sensitivity due to temperature variations. All pyrgeometers...
