Kaydon pitch and yaw bearing upgrades

Product catalog summary
Introduction
Kaydon, in collaboration with SKF, offers upgraded pitch and yaw bearing solutions designed to reduce life cycle costs and improve productivity for wind turbines. With over 30 years of experience, Kaydon has developed solutions that address common failure modes and enhance bearing performance.

Common Causes of Pitch Bearing Failure
Contrary to standard predictions, common failures are not due to fatigue spalling or brinelling but are often related to lubricant degradation and structural inflexibility. Key failure causes include:
  • Lubrication-induced failures such as vibratory wear, corrosion, and surface-induced fatigue.
  • Load and operation-induced failures like component fracture and separator lockup.
  • Ellipse truncation failure due to inadequate support causing deformation.

Kaydon Upgraded Pitch Bearing Solutions
Kaydon offers solutions tailored to the unique challenges of each turbine system, focusing on:
  • Mitigating edge loading and strengthening races.
  • Addressing separator load and wear.
  • Preventing contamination ingress and retaining lubricant.

Critical Design Features
  • Edge Loading: Increased path surface area and added material to strengthen rings.
  • Separator Design: Segmented separator rings and high-strength steel alloys for durability.
  • Raceway Geometry: Improved load sharing and balance with GD&T controls.
  • High-Endurance Seal Design: Patented seal design prevents contaminant ingress and uses wear-resistant materials.
  • Raceway Hardening: Tailored case depth and uniform hardness pattern to absorb heavy loads.
  • Packaging: Corrosion prevention with coated mounting holes and vacuum-sealed packaging.

Conclusion
Kaydon's upgraded pitch bearing solutions offer significant improvements in durability and performance, addressing critical design features to extend the life cycle of wind turbine bearings.

Kaydon pitch and yaw bearing upgrades-1

Kaydon pitch and yaw bearing upgrades Reduce life cycle costs with SKF and Kaydon Common causes of pitch bearing failure With the potential cost of downtime and bearing change-outs running into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, it pays to work with a supplier who can offer the upgraded bearing solution that will improve productivity and extend bearing life. The classic failure modes predicted by standard bearing calculation models (i.e. fatigue spalling and brinelling) are actually very uncommon causes for failure. More often, pitch bearings fail for reasons related to lubricant degradation and/or lack of structural flexibility, including: Kaydon has over 30 years experience designing and manufacturing slewing bearings for wind turbine pitch and yaw positions. Serving the wind aftermarket for the past decade, Kaydon pitch and yaw bearing solutions have been proven to reduce the total life cycle cost of wind turbines. We’ve analyzed dozens of failed pitch bearings using laboratorygrade inspection systems and have documented the most common failures. • ubrication-induced failures from L vibratory wear (false brinelling), corrosion, denting, and surfaceinduced fatigue • Load and operation-induced failures such as component fracture (rolling elements, separators, races), separator lockup, and core crushing Ellipse truncation failure In a pitch bearing, the contact area between the ball and the raceway forms an elliptical shape that is centered over the race contact angle. When the races are very thin or inadequately supported, deformation can cause the ellipse to drop off the physical raceway surface, resulting in truncation. Under severe truncation, stress can cause the ball path edges to break or the balls to fractu
