Overview of Vacuum Chucks (Model KVR)

Vacuum chucks utilize atmospheric pressure to hold workpieces by creating a vacuum inside the chuck. They are suitable for machining nonmetallic and nonmagnetic materials such as plastics, aluminum, brass, stainless steel, ceramics, and glass. These chucks are commonly used in grinding and cutting applications.

Key Features

  • Adjustable suction holes on the chuck face allow customization of the effective holding area to match workpiece shapes via thread valves and valves.
  • Suction holes include cross grooves to expand the vacuum acting area, reducing the number of thread valves needed and improving work efficiency.
  • The chuck work face is made of iron, enabling self-grinding to maintain parallelism and allowing the use of magnetic devices as workpiece stoppers.
  • Special suction hole layout adapters can be installed to suit specific workpieces and procedures.
  • These chucks can be mounted on magnetic chucks for enhanced versatility.
  • No internal heat sources or moving parts ensure high precision machining.

Model Variants

  • KVR-D (Thread Valve Type): Allows setting an effective holding area tailored to workpiece shapes with combined adjustment of thread valves and valves. Cross-shaped suction grooves reduce the number of thread valves, enhancing efficiency.
  • KVR-H (Small Hole Type): Features φ4 mm holes spaced at 8 mm pitches on the holding face. Available upon request.

Operating Principles and Precautions

The vacuum chuck operates by exhausting air inside the chuck using a vacuum pump, creating a pressure differential that holds the workpiece by atmospheric pressure. The maximum achievable vacuum pressure difference is approximately 80 kPa (600 mmHg), corresponding to a holding force of about 0.8 kgf/cm².

For example, a workpiece with a 100 cm² holding area can be held with approximately 800 N (80 kgf) of force. However, rough or distorted workpiece surfaces can cause leaks, significantly reducing holding power. Leak prevention measures are necessary for such cases.

Heat generated during machining can deform workpieces, especially thin stainless steel plates, which are difficult to hold due to thermal deformation. Users should consider machining methods carefully and consult the manufacturer if needed.
