Product catalog summary
Contact Information:
Japan Steel Works, Ltd. has offices in Tokyo, Europe (Germany), USA, China (Shanghai), Singapore, and Thailand. Contact details include phone numbers and websites for each location.
Product Overview:
The document discusses the NIC (Nikko Intensive Cylinder), a specialized barrel used in plastics machinery for improved performance in polymer processing.
Performance Evaluation:
Photos and figures illustrate the standard barrel and NIC, highlighting the structural differences and kneading effects.
Features:
  • Higher Mixing Performance: The NIC enhances mixing through extensional polymer flow, reducing mixing temperature and average shear rate.
  • Energy Saving: The NIC consumes 10 to 20% less energy compared to standard barrels.
  • Less Polymer Stagnation: High viscosity area mixing prevents localized heating and black specks.
Applicable Processes:
  • Polymer Blending (e.g., ABS+AS, PP+EPR)
  • Filler Compounding (e.g., talc, calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide)
  • Master Batch Compounding (e.g., carbon black, titanium oxide)
  • Other high-level micro dispersion compounding
Conclusion:
The NIC barrel, with its flow direction grooves, enhances mixing and dispersion performance at lower polymer temperatures, offering advantages over traditional screw configurations.

Special kneading barrel "NIC"-1

LEAFLET Special kneading barrel The Japan Steel Works, Ltd. Plastics Machinery Business Division NIC (Nikko Intensive Cylinder) is a barrel with flow direction grooves on the inner surface to pass more polymer through the gap between grooves and screw tip. With the extensional polymer flow, NIC improves mixing and dispersion performance with lower polymer temperature which cannot be attained only by screw configuration. Applicable process 1. Polymer blending (e.g. ABS+AS, PP+EPR, etc.) Fig. 2 Kneading effect at tip clearance 2. Filler compounding (e.g. talc, calcium carbonate, magnesium hydroxide, etc.) Performance evaluation 3. Master batch compounding (e. g. Carbon black, titanium oxide, etc.) 4. Other compounding with high-level micro dispersion Features 1. Higher mixing performance ・Extensional polymer flow between grooves and screw tip increases kneading effect. ・Mixing temperature can be reduced as average shear rate decreases. 2. Energy saving ・10 to 20 % lower energy consumption than standard barrel. 3. Less polymer stagnation ・Mixing at high viscosity area prevents localized heating and black specks. Japan Steel Works, Ltd.
