Product catalog summary
Technology Overview
Soyad™ adhesive technology is a patented, formaldehyde-free adhesive system developed by Ashland for environmentally-friendly hardwood plywood panels. It is used with veneer, particleboard, or medium-density fiberboard cores, offering strength comparable to formaldehyde-based adhesives. Soyad adhesives are cost-competitive and often cheaper than other no-added-formaldehyde (NAF) technologies. The adhesive is water-based, using natural soy flour and a proprietary cross-linking resin to form a durable, water-resistant thermoset adhesive. It can be customized to meet specific manufacturing requirements.
Ease of Use
Soyad adhesives are mixed onsite and applied using standard equipment for formaldehyde-based adhesives, requiring only minor system changes. Production processes remain unchanged, with similar spread rates, press temperatures, and press times.
Industry Acceptance
Since 2005, over 70 million hardwood plywood panels have been produced in North America using Soyad adhesives. It is widely accepted globally, helping manufacturers comply with formaldehyde regulations and improve indoor air quality.
Formaldehyde Emission Standards
Soyad adhesives contain no formaldehyde, resulting in emissions significantly lower than panels made with ultra-low-emitting-formaldehyde (ULEF) adhesives. Panels meet all global formaldehyde emission standards, including CARB Phase 2, European E0, and Japanese F**** standards, and are CARB Phase 2 exempt, qualifying for LEED points.
Performance Advantages
Soyad adhesives offer several advantages: eliminating formaldehyde-related health hazards, being cost-competitive, and allowing easy transition from formaldehyde-based adhesives. Panels meet global emission standards, are CARB Phase 2 exempt, and qualify for LEED points.

Technology Overview Soyad™ adhesive technology is a patented, formaldehyde-free adhesive system from Ashland that is widely used to manufacture environmentally-friendly hardwood plywood panels. Soyad adhesives are used to produce panels with veneer, particleboard or medium-density fiberboard cores. The strength provided by a Soyad adhesive is comparable to that of formaldehyde-based adhesives. Soyad adhesives are cost competitive with formaldehyde-based adhesives and, in most cases, cost less than other no-added-formaldehyde (NAF) technologies.
