Product catalog summary
Features
Series PAZ and PAG polarizer-analyzer-attenuators offer high extinction ratios, energy escape ports, and compact designs. They are designed for polarization of unpolarized beams, analysis of polarization properties, variable attenuation of linear polarized beams, and use in electro-optic modulation systems.

Functionality
These devices provide high continuous wave (CW) power-handling capability, high pulse-damage thresholds, visible transmission for alignment (PAZ series), low insertion loss, minimal beam distortion, and broadband operation from 2 to 14μm.

Design and Construction
The units feature a compact design with a rectangular cross-section for easy alignment of the polarization plane. An energy escape port allows the rejected beam to exit the housing, increasing power-handling capability and providing a nearly perfectly polarized beam.

Applications
These polarizer-analyzer-attenuators are suitable for high-power CW and pulsed-laser applications, offering reliability, versatility, and accuracy. They are constructed with modular components for easy repair and replacement.

Specifications
Standard units use Zinc Selenide (ZnSe) or Germanium (Ge) Brewster windows, minimizing insertion loss and laser damage. The design ensures minimal angular deviation and no lateral displacement of the output beam. Units are available in air-cooled, water-cooled, or heat-sink-cooled versions, with power ratings significantly increased when using the energy escape port.

Ordering Information
Model numbers specify window material (Zinc Selenide or Germanium), clear aperture size, and cooling method. For example, a ZnSe, 10-mm aperture, air-cooled polarizer is specified as PAZ-10-AC.

Performance
Transmission at 10.6μm is greater than 98% for PAZ and greater than 95% for PAG. Beam deviation is less than 1 milliradian, and extinction ratios vary by model, with PAZ offering up to >500:1 and PAG up to >3000:1.

An added plus is the rectangular cross-section of the new units, which eliminates any guessing as to where the plane of polarization of the transmitted beam lies, since it is exactly parallel to the long dimen- sion of the rectangle. > Incorporated into the design concept is a userՒs option which allows the main portion of the rejected beam to exit the housing by simply removing a metal cover plate. This rejected beam can then be put to useful purpose (i.e., to fire a laser-triggered spark gap). Allowing the rejected beam to exit the housing also in- creases the power-handling capability. The rejected beam can be dumped into a water-cooled or heat-sink- cooled option. In addition, this rejected beam is almost perfectly polarized.Series PAZ and PAG polarizer-analyzer-attenuators are specially tailored to the needs of the high-power CW and pulsed-laser user, although their rugged construction and ease of use makes them attractive for any polarization-sensitive IR application when reliability, versatility, and accuracy are important. The maximum power-handling capability of these units is at this time unknowna 15-mm aperture H2O-cooled PAZ has performed successfully in a 1,000-watt CW CO2 laser beam; the 20-mm aperture PAZs should take much more. In the event a unit becomes damaged from excessive power levels, the unique modular construc- tion allows quick repair or replacement of the damaged component, minimizing downtime and repair expense. >
