A battery operated IP5X rated safety device for screening personnel entering areas where electrostatic discharges must be avoided. ID-471AM Conduction to Ground Monitor The ID-471AM is a battery-powered Conduction to Ground Monitor which provides a simple and reliable means for screening personnel entering sensitive areas for the effectiveness of their conductive footwear to avoid the presence of electrostatic charge on the human body. The equipment can be used for testing the integrity of both wrist straps and conductive footwear and its IP5X rated. Sensitive or hazardous areas may occur in the explosives, chemical, petrochemical and plastics industries in the handling of solvents and hydrocarbon fuels, and in the semi-conductor industry in the handling and assembly of special semi-conductor devices. Conductive/antistatic footwear providing conduction to earth of 0 - 1MΩ is a simple way to avoid accumulation of net electrostatic charge on personnel. The Model 471AM has a pre-set threshold above which the red danger lamp will illuminate. The model ID-471AM Conduction to Ground Monitor unit is usually mounted on the wall at about shoulder height, just outside the sensitive or hazardous area. When mounted on a wall, the unit is connected to a bare metal plate on the ground just below the unit. By standing on the metal plate, holding the metal handle on the wall unit and pressing the ‘TEST’ button the monitor circuit is activated and the electrical resistance is measured between the test handle and the floor plate. The unit will show a red fail light and this only changes to green if the resistance to ground is acceptable (between 0Ω and 1MΩ) and is displayed on the analogue meter. To test the integrity of a wrist strap, the selector switch on the front panel of the instrument is moved to the wrist strap position and the user connects the wrist strap plug to the connector on the instrument and the ‘TEST’ button is depressed. The circuit is arranged to provide fail/safe operation and a green light will only be shown if the resistance path is below 1MΩ.
