Product catalog summary
Background
Outokumpu is a global leader in stainless steel production, with a century of expertise in metals and mining. Their Sheffield facility, part of the Long Products business, produces various forms of stainless steel for industries such as automotive, construction, and energy.

Objective
The Sheffield facility required new safety showers due to unreliable water pressure and the need for more units than typical for the site size. Compliance with EN 15154 and ANSI Z358.1-2014 standards was essential, ensuring unobstructed paths to showers and ease of maintenance.

Solution
Hughes Safety Showers provided tank showers that are self-contained, eliminating the need for a plumbed water supply. These units meet EN and ANSI standards, offering a flow rate of 76 litres per minute and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. The polyethylene tanks and GRP panelling ensure high corrosion and UV resistance. To address maintenance safety, GRP ladder platforms were installed, allowing safe access to the tanks.

Enhancing Safety at Outokumpu
The new showers are larger and more visible, enhancing safety perception among employees and visitors. The GRP ladder platforms exceed safety regulations, providing secure access for maintenance. The installation by Hughes' expert team ensured compliance and peace of mind.

The facility also needed a larger number of showers than is usual for a site of this size. Operatives at the site work on different levels and regardless of how close a shower is, it is vital that there are no obstacles in the way, including stairs. Annual Turnover €6.4 billion (2019) EN 15154 and ANSI Z358.1-2014 standards both state that the path to a safety shower should be free of obstacles and obstructions.
