Introduction
Twiflex, established in 1946 and based in Twickenham, England, is renowned for its advanced braking technology used in industrial applications worldwide. The company has produced over half a million brake units, recognized for their quality and reliability in safety-critical applications.
Brake Calipers
Twiflex offers a diverse range of industrial disc brake calipers, including spring-applied units that can be retracted pneumatically, hydraulically, or electrically, and direct-acting brakes with positive retraction devices. Pneumatic brakes are suitable for light to medium duties, hydraulic brakes for higher torque, and mechanical units for light tensioning or when external power is unavailable.
Discs and Couplings
Twiflex provides standard and custom-designed discs and mounting hubs, along with torsionally flexible couplings that often integrate with brake discs to serve as critical interfaces in transmission systems.
Brake Pads
The lifespan of brake pads is influenced by pad area, energy dissipation, and peak braking path temperature. Twiflex offers analytical and test data to estimate pad life.
Hydraulic Power Units
Twiflex supplies electro-hydraulic power packs ranging from basic on/off control to fully customized systems, ensuring compatibility with the brakes being controlled.
Monitoring Equipment
Monitoring is crucial for brake installations, especially in safety-critical applications. Twiflex provides electro-mechanical and electronic monitoring units to indicate brake status or pad condition.

MU Series
The MU series, the smallest in the Twiflex range, is designed for light stopping and holding duties, supporting disc thicknesses of 8mm to 12.7mm and requiring dry, filtered, non-lubricated compressed air for pneumatic operation.
MS Series Disc Brake Calipers
The MS series is designed for discs of 12.7mm thickness and a minimum diameter of 250mm. Pneumatic operation requires dry, filtered, and non-lubricated compressed air, with control valves operated manually or via pneumatic/electrical signals.
Specifications
Specifications include maximum braking force, pressure, weight, and volume displacement for various models. The maximum braking force varies across models, with the highest being 2.76kN at 7 bar.
Model Variants
Various models such as MUS3, MUS4, MSA, MSD, MSE, MSH, MSF, MSG, MSL, and MSK are described, each with specific applications and force ratings.
Operational Recommendations
Recommendations include using Twiflex asbestos-free brake pads, mounting calipers horizontally, and using appropriate control valves for pneumatic operations.

Brake discs are made from spheroidal graphite iron, and hubs from steel 080M40, with customization options available.
Installation Recommendations
Brakes should ideally be mounted horizontally, with the number of calipers varying based on disc size.
Monitoring Units
Twiflex offers monitoring options including IP67-rated sensors and electro-mechanical switches to monitor brake status and pad condition.
Quality Assurance
Twiflex is certified to BS EN ISO 9001:2000, ensuring quality from quotation to delivery, with traceability options available.
Hydraulic Power Units
Twiflex provides reliable electro-hydraulic power units with options for soft braking and independent control of multiple brake circuits.
Braking Calculations
Calculations for braking torque consider load torque, inertia, and friction, with formulas provided for clamping force, braking force, and braking torque.
Special Considerations
Factors such as rubbing speed, operating temperatures, and power dissipation are crucial for optimizing braking performance.
Conversion Factors
A table of conversion factors assists in translating measurements between different units.
