Product catalog summary
Overview
The Ear Simulator for Telephonometry Type 4185 is designed for telephone measurements requiring an IEC 60318–1 coupler. It converts acoustic signals from an earphone into an electrical equivalent, simulating the human ear's response. This device is essential for electroacoustic measurements on telephone handsets under defined acoustical conditions and complies with ITU-T, IEEE, and BS recommendations.

Components and Features
Type 4185 includes an acoustic coupler with a built-in miniature sound source for seal checking, a microphone, and a preamplifier. It fits into the Telephone Test Head Type 4602-B and is compatible with various Brüel & Kjær telephone test systems. Key features include performance according to ITU-T Rec. P.57 Type 1 and IEC 60318–1 standards, a miniature sound source for automatic seal checks, and a soft seal. It is supplied with individual calibration data.

Calibration
The ear simulator is calibrated according to ITU-T Rec. P.57 during manufacture. Calibration data is provided on a chart and a Coupler Data Disk, stored in a Microsoft Excel workbook. Acoustic impedance and frequency sensitivity response are measured as functions of frequency.

Compliance and Standards
The product meets CE, RCM, China RoHS, and WEEE standards. It complies with safety standards EN/IEC 61010–1 and UL 61010B–1, and EMC standards EN/IEC 61000–6–3, CISPR 22, and FCC Rules Part 15. Environmental testing standards include IEC 60068–2–1, IEC 60068–2–2, and IEC 60068–2–78.

Specifications
The ear simulator operates within a frequency range of 100 Hz to 4 kHz. It measures 103 mm in length and 60 mm in diameter, weighing 332 g. The miniature sound source has a typical sensitivity of –7 dB re 1 Pa/V at 250 Hz and a maximum input voltage of 10 V.

Environmental Conditions
Calibration conditions include a static pressure of 101.3 ±3.0 kPa, a temperature of 23 ±3 °C, and relative humidity of 60 ±20%.

Ordering Information
The Type 4185 Ear Simulator includes a condenser microphone, microphone preamplifier, acoustic coupler, soft seals, cables, a BNC input adaptor, a calibration chart, and a data disk. Optional accessories include a sound calibrator and factory standard calibration services.

Ear Simulator for Telephonometry Type 4185-2

Description Type 4185 simulates the acoustical impedance of the average human ear, under sealed conditions. The seal between Type 4185 and the handset under test must be completely tight. The quality of this seal can be verified using the miniature sound source located inside the included Acoustic Coupler UA‐1110. This sound source is a small transducer that can be excited with an external signal to produce a sound pressure inside the main cavity. If the seal between the coupler and handset is poor, the sound pressure measured by the microphone will be considerably lower at low frequencies than if the seal is tight....
