The high-temperature form of BBO (a-BaB2O4) is a negative uniaxial crystal with large birefringence over a broad transparent range from 189 nm to 3500 nm. MT-Optics has successfully grown this crystal to a large size. While its physical, chemical, thermal, and optical properties are similar to b-BBO, the nonlinear optical properties are absent due to its centric symmetry. Therefore, it is not recommended for nonlinear optical (NLO) processes.
