Switching Unit Vario-5

Product catalog summary
Overview: The Vario-5 Switching Unit is engineered for variothermal control in injection moulding, enhancing part quality and reducing cycle times by alternating between high and low temperatures during injection and cooling phases.
Specifications: The system integrates with two Thermo-5 units, utilizing a fluid-fluid technique for temperature switching. It is compatible with existing moulds that have appropriate temperature control channels and can be operated centrally via Thermo-5 or Panel-5.
Features: The Vario-5 is cost-effective, supports multiple uses, and integrates seamlessly with existing systems. It includes intelligent wizards for temperature and time settings, USB data recording, and Excel analysis. Its compact, clean, and quiet design is ideal for clean room environments.
Performance: The unit improves part quality by eliminating weld lines, enhancing contour accuracy, and reducing sink marks. It offers precise process management with monitored switching and an integrated energy buffer, minimizing heating and cooling power requirements.
Safety and Maintenance: The Vario-5 features automated process monitoring, durable non-corroding materials, and a closed system to prevent steam and corrosion. It operates without pressure shocks and requires minimal maintenance.
Technical Specifications: Compatible with various power supplies and communication interfaces like CAN and OPC UA, the unit works with Thermo-5 units for both hot and cold circuits, with specific safety valve and manometer recommendations.
Recommendations: For optimal performance, temperature control channels should be near the cavity surface, and variothermal areas should be isolated. High thermal conductivity materials, such as copper alloys, are recommended for critical areas.
Company Background: HB-Therm AG, a Swiss-based leader in temperature control units since 1967, emphasizes Swiss-made quality and is ISO 9001/14001 certified. The company has a global presence with subsidiaries and agencies worldwide.
Customer Service: HB-Therm provides expert advice on temperature control processes, product specifications, connections, data interfaces, heat transfer mediums, and equipment servicing. Support is available for specialist requirements, equipment operation, and staff training.

Switching Unit Vario-5-2

Switching Unit Vario-5 Special challenges in injection moulding cannot be overcome with classical mould temperature control. The solution is a variothermal control: High temperature during injection, cold temperature in the cooling phase. Together with two temperature control units Thermo-5, the Vario-5 forms a variothermal system according to the fluid-fluid technique. Alternatingly, it links either the hot or the cold unit to the same circuit. It is quite possible to use existing moulds if the temperature control channels are suitably arranged. Vario-5 provides easy and quiet operation. It...

Switching Unit Vario-5-7

In injection moulding some typical problems cannot be solved by traditional temperature control: • visible weld lines in optically critical areas. • incomplete moulding of the finest structures and lacking contour accuracy (e.g. for optical lenses, micro- or nanostructures, piano lacquer) • insufficient surface quality of foamed and fibre-reinforced parts • excessively high injection pressures for extremely small cross-sections • sink marks at extreme wall thickness ratios Reasons: In injection moulding the hot plastic melt meets a relatively cool mould surface in the injection phase. The latter...

The Process The fluid-fluid technique sends alternatingly hot and cold temperature control medium through the temperature control channel immediately below the cavity surface, controlled by the machine cycle. The temperatures are set on the two temperature control units. If there is a temperature sensor available at a suitable position in the mould, the switch-over or the start of injection can also be made depending on the mould temperature to increase process reliability. Frame Conditions In variothermal control the temperature at the surface of the cavity will be actively changed within the injection cycle. The area around the cavity is thus cyclically heated and cooled. Depending on the configuration of the temperature control channels the temperature at the surface of the cavity reacts stronger or weaker and the area is larger or smaller. To efficiently achieve the largest temperature gradients possible the following is recommended: Distance of the temperature control channel from the surface of the cavity Variothermal mass Isolation Connections Temperature...
