Product catalog summary
Introduction to Ussing Systems
An Ussing System is a tool for measuring transport across epithelial membranes, named after Hans Ussing. It consists of a chamber, perfusion system, and optionally, an amplifier and data acquisition system. These systems are used in studies involving tissues like the stomach, intestines, bladder, and skin, as well as cell monolayers.
Types of Studies
Ussing systems are used for electrophysiology, diffusion-based studies, and radiotracer studies. Electrophysiology setups require a current/voltage clamp amplifier and data acquisition system, while diffusion-based systems focus on measuring transepithelial fluid transport.
System Components
The system includes a chamber and perfusion system, with optional amplifier and data acquisition package. Temperature control may require a circulating water bath. Chamber systems include Classic, Self-Contained, and Multi-Channel designs, each with specific features for holding membranes and controlling conditions.
Classic Ussing Systems
The U9500 and U9520 systems are based on the original Ussing design. The U9500 is a basic setup with fixed pin configurations, while the U9520 uses interchangeable inserts for flexibility. Both systems include a chamber, support stand, circulation reservoir, and electrode set.
Data Acquisition and Amplifiers
Data acquisition is crucial for processing data from the Ussing system. Warner offers the Acquire and Analyze system and a Computer Controlled Multi-clamp with Software, integrating amplifiers and software for streamlined operation. Compatible amplifiers include the EC-800 and VCC-600.
Circulation Reservoirs
Available in 4, 10, and 20 ml capacities, these are hand-blown borosilicate glass apparatus with dual outlets for connection to Ussing chambers. They use a 'gas-lift' perfusion system for circulation and oxygenation of buffer solutions, with temperature regulation via a water jacket.
Electrode Sets and Agar Bridge Fittings
Each chamber includes a U9975A Electrode Set with Ag-AgCl pellet electrodes for voltage and Ag wire electrodes for current. Luer taper fittings provide agar salt bridge connections.
Self-Contained Ussing Chambers
The U9926 and U2500 models integrate the solution reservoir into the chamber housing, reducing size and increasing ease of use. They feature single- and dual-channel models with easily exchangeable inserts.
Multichannel Ussing Chambers
The NaviCyte and EasyMount systems support up to 24 independent chambers. They offer horizontal and vertical configurations for transport studies, with options for electrophysiological measurements using electrodes.
Ordering Information
Detailed order numbers and descriptions are provided for base assemblies, inserts, accessories, and replacement parts across all systems.
NaviCyte Systems
Designed for laboratory use in diffusion and electrophysiological studies, these systems are used for drug transport studies, cytotoxicity testing, and electrophysiological measurements. The NaviCyte Horizontal system can accommodate up to six chambers per heater/support block, while the Vertical system supports up to 24 chambers.
EasyMount Chamber Systems
These systems include a heater block for temperature control and are available in two main types: P2300 for standard volume and P2400 for low volume applications. They support various culture cups and include electrodes and accessories for specific applications.
Epithelial Voltage Clamps
The EC-800 and EC-825A are designed for studies of epithelial transport and electrical properties of tissue. They feature high common mode rejection, clamp speed selection, and fluid resistance compensation.
VCC-600 and VCC-MC Series
These voltage/current clamps are designed for studying ion transport across epithelial tissues. The VCC-600 offers single-channel capabilities, while the VCC-MC series offers multichannel capabilities for high-throughput applications.
Data Acquisition Systems
The HAI-118 system and LabScribe software are designed for various scientific studies, offering features like AutoScale, real-time annotation, and data export. The system supports epithelial, oocyte, organ and tissue bath, and electrophysiology studies.
Multi-Clamp System
This computer-controlled system integrates amplifiers, data acquisition, and analysis software, supporting multiple channels and independent chamber control in various modes.

Ussing Chambers Systems From Warner An Ussing System, used to measure transport across epithelial membranes, is generally comprised of a chamber and perfusion system, and, if needed, an amplifier and data acquisition system. The heart of the system lies in the chamber with the other components performing supporting roles. The 'Classic' chamber design, first introduced by the Danish physiologist Hans Ussing in the early 1950's, is still in wide use today. However, several newer designs are now available that optimize for convenience and for diffusion- or electrophysiology-based measurements. Epithelia...

Ussing Chambers Systems from Warner (continued) The Components The Chamber System While decisions need to be made for each step in assembling a complete Ussing system, the greatest complexity is associated with choosing the chamber and its associated tissue support. Once these elements have been addressed, then the task of selecting the other components (amplification, data acquisition, etc) is more or less direct. All Ussing chamber systems have the following features in common: a means to hold the membrane while minimizing tissue damage, a means for holding and exchanging solutions, a means...

Classic Ussing Systems The investigation of ionic transport across epithelial cells was greatly facilitated by the development of a chamber system designed by Dr. H. H. Ussing more than 40 years ago. Today this equipment bears his name. The U9500 ʻClassicʼ design presented here varies little from Dr. Ussingʼs original equipment which remains in wide use for the study of electrophysiological properties of epithelial tissues. A newer design, the U9520 ʻClassic with Insertsʼ allows for insertion of cell culture or tissue supports and greatly increases the functionality of the classic Ussing chamber....
