The RoHS Directive, initially implemented as 2002/95/EC on July 1, 2006, restricts the use of certain hazardous substances in electronic and electrical equipment. It was updated to RoHS 2.0 (Directive 2011/65/EU) on July 21, 2011, with further amendments in 2015 (Directive 2015/863) adding four phthalates to the restricted substances list.
The directive applies to 11 categories of electronic and electrical products, including large and small appliances, IT equipment, consumer devices, lighting, tools, toys, medical and monitoring equipment, vending machines, and other electronic devices. It excludes certain products as specified in clause 2(4).
1. Each EU member state enforces the directive, which restricts ten substances: Lead, Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium, PBB, PBDE, DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP.
2. RoHS 2.0 replaces RoHS 1.0, with phased implementation for different product categories.
3. Exemptions exist for products/materials that cannot be replaced economically or technologically.
4. Products must display the CE mark and include a Declaration of Conformity. Manufacturers must maintain technical documentation for at least 10 years.
5. The directive requires testing and documentation to demonstrate compliance, using standards like EN50581:2012.
The directive covers products below AC1000V and DC1500, including large and small household appliances, IT equipment, consumer devices, lighting fixtures, power tools, toys, medical devices, monitoring equipment, and vending machines.
Services include XRF scanning, quantitative testing of hazardous substances, consulting, training, and preparation of technical documents according to RoHS 2.0 standards.
