Product catalog summary
Introduction
Spabond 540 is a modified epoxy adhesive designed for bonding polyester and epoxy laminates, ideal for large production boats. It offers long working times, exceptional toughness, and low shrinkage. The adhesive is available with various hardeners and is RINA approved for structural use in yachts.
Specifications
The adhesive system includes Spabond 540 resin for gaps up to 30mm and Spabond 540LV for bondlines less than 20mm. It is available in different packaging options and provides excellent gap-filling properties.
Instructions for Use
Spabond 540 should be used between 15-25°C with humidity below 70%. Surfaces must be clean and prepared by peel-plying or abrading. The resin and hardener should be mixed thoroughly, with specific attention to the container's walls and bottom. For cartridge use, discard the first mix head length to ensure proper mixing.
Properties
The adhesive offers various working properties depending on the hardener used, with pot life ranging from 25 minutes to over 2 hours. It has a sag resistance of up to 30mm and a shelf life of 24 months.
Mechanical Properties
Spabond 540 exhibits strong mechanical properties, including cleavage and shear strength on steel and laminate materials. It maintains tensile strength and elongation across different hardeners.
Health and Safety
Protective gloves, clothing, and eye protection are recommended. Adequate ventilation is necessary, and skin contact should be avoided. A full Material Safety Data Sheet is available for detailed safety information.
Transport & Storage
Resin and hardeners should be stored in closed containers in a dry place between 10-25°C. They have a shelf life of two years if stored properly.

deally Spabond 540 should be used between 15 and 25°C and below a relative humidity of 70%. The handling / processing & mechanical properties of the adhesive are likely to be affected outside of these processing conditions. Surface Preparation Ensure that polyester / epoxy laminates are fully cured before bonding, then prepare as described below: Peel-plied surface - To achieve the optimum bond strength it is recommended to use a nylon peel ply. This will provide a clean, contaminant-free textured surface, suitable for secondary bonding Alternatively abrade the surface as detailed in the section...

The following points must be considered 1. Skin contact must be avoided by wearing protective gloves. Gurit recommends the use of disposable nitrile gloves for most applications. The use of barrier creams is not recommended, but to preserve skin condition a moisturising cream should be used after washing 2. Overalls or other protective clothing should be worn when mixing, laminating or sanding. Contaminated work clothes should be thoroughly cleaned before re-use. 3. Eye protection should be worn if there is a risk of resin, hardener, solvent or dust entering the eyes. If this occurs flush the...
