Carbon Composite Body Panels
Gurit’s SPRINT® CBS materials technology enables the production of A-Class carbon body panels directly from the tool using an out-of-autoclave moulding process. This technology ensures exceptional surface quality throughout the vehicle's lifecycle and offers design flexibility not possible with metal panels. Key benefits include customization of strength, stiffness, and weight, and ultimate freedom for designers.

Part Production Process
  • Design: Gurit advises on composite-specific design and can produce complete 3D CAD parts with specified parameters. The design process is interactive, involving customer input and collaboration with tool makers.
  • Material Kitting: 3D part geometry is processed into 2D kits of plies, cut with high accuracy using CNC ultrasonic machines, and assembled for use.
  • Tools and Moulding: Plies are applied to preform tools and transferred to mould tools with a vacuum system for rapid closure, air removal, and material consolidation. Tools are designed for surface finish, durability, and rapid cycle times.
  • CNC Machining: Cured panels are machined to remove flash and prepare for bonding, using a high precision 5-axis CNC machining center.
  • Bonding and Priming: Precision bonding jigs are used for final assembly, followed by priming in controlled booths. Final color paint can be applied by the customer or at Gurit’s facility.
  • CMM and Final Inspection: Parts undergo rigorous quality inspection using Coordinate Measurement Machines and laser scanning for 3D interrogation. A-class surfaces are inspected under 1000 lux lighting.

CBS 200 Press Technology
Gurit has developed a press process to reduce labor and time for high-performance composite panels, allowing for up to 40,000 parts per year from a single tool set with a curing time of just 10 minutes.
